Phosphate is specifically adsorbed by aluminum hydroxycarbonate by anion ligand exchange. IR analysis indicated that phosphate exchanged with specifically adsorbed carbonate. Adsorption is favored by low pH and is inversely related to particle size. Adsorption of phosphate decreases the rate of acid neutralization of aluminum hydroxycarbonate. The results are applied to the treatment of hyperphosphatemia and hypophosphatemia.
Young male Sprague-Dawley rats were injected intraperitoneally with a single dose of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1, 3 mg/kg). At 3, 6, 12, and 24 hours and 1, 2, and 5 weeks, the rats were killed and liver samples were taken for examination of sequential ultrastructural changes and localization of acid phosphatase (AcPase), thiamine pyrophosphatase (TPPase) and glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase) activity. At 3-6 hrs of AFB1 treatment, the nucleoli became compacted and the network forms of nucleolonema disappeared. Parallel arrays of rough ER encountered in normal liver cells became deranged. Smooth ER increased to form groups of SER anastomosis or vesicles near the golgi area. At 12-24 hours, disruptions of nucleoli, ER systems, and polysomes became more evident. Parallel arrays of ER membranes, forming whorls in the cytoplasm as well as in the cytoplasmic patches (CP), were G6Pase-positive, although the CP were AcPase-negative. The TPPase reaction in bile canaliculi was frequently diminished, but was present in some measure in the Golgi saccules. By 1-2 weeks, most of the injured cells had recovered gradually. The CP disappeared and parallel arrays of RER were observed again in most parenchymal cells. At 5 weeks, the appearance of the nucleoli was normal, as was that of the other organelles. We concluded that the hepatic parenchymal cells had serious lesions at 12 and 24 hours of AFB1 treatment and then recovered nonsynchronously. The response, resistance, and ability to recover from the toxicity of AFB1 varied among the parenchymal cells. The three marker enzymes persisted throughout all regimens of AFB1 treatment.

In order to determine the geographical distribution of Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus in Taiwan, 2,759 fresh stool samples were collected from 5th-grade school children of both sexes among 43 preliminary schools in 16 counties, and then examined by means of the modified test-tube filter-paper cultivation method for identification of the filariform larvae of hookworm. Both species of A. duodenale and N. americanus are widespread in Taiwan. The overall infection rate was 20.00%. The rate of A. duodenale, N. americanaus and mixed infection of both species was 9.85%, and 7.75% and 2.39% respectively. Geographically, N. americanus (12.64%) predominated over A. duodenale (5.43%) in the north (Ilan, Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli) and the east (Taitung) areas. On the contrary, A. duodenale (13.40%) predominated over N. americanus (5.63%) in the central (Nantou, Taichung, Changhua and Yunlin), the south (Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung) and the east (Hualien) areas. On the other hand, the rate of infection on the offshore island (Penghu) was much lower (1.19%) than the others (21.10-21.29%).
Eighty-five patients with acute myelogenous or acute lymphoblastic leukemia were treated at the City of Hope National Medicine Center with chemotherapy, total body irradiation, and bone marrow transplant. The average mid-line dose to these patients was 1002 rad with a uniformity of 8%.

Vasomotor responses of the skin of the thumb and the big toe were measured in normal subjects and patients with spinal transection at a neutral ambient temperature of 22.0 +/- 0.5 degrees C, and in a cool (12.0 +/- 0.5 degrees C) and warm (32.0 +/- 0.5 degrees C) environment. The vasomotor response of the hand and foot to the cooling and warming of part of the opposite upper or lower extremity was also recorded. Spinal transection at T5-11 abolishes acutely all vasomotor responses in the paraplegic lower extremities, but does not alter the responses in the upper extremities. By 4 months, the vasomotor tone in the lower extremities at a neutral ambient temperature returned to normal values as did the response to a cool and warm environment. The crossed vasomotor reflex to cooling and warming one lower extremity recovers more slowly, requiring a period of 18 months for complete recovery. The slower recovery of the vasomotor reflex in spinally transected man than in similarly treated dogs is though to be due to the greater spinal shock in the former. The recovery of vasomotor responses in the paraplegic limbs to cooling and warming after thoracic transections suggests that these responses are primitive and powerful thermoregulatory mechanisms.
