Development of an ecosystem sensitivity model regarding mercury levels in fish using a preference modeling methodology: application to the Canadian boreal system.

The objective of this study is to use a preference modeling methodology as a predictive tool to roughly assess the sensitivity of the ecosystems regarding mercury (Hg) concentrations in fish. We apply a preference modeling methodology to rank lakes within the boreal forest from highest to lowest Hg concentrations in fish using simple environmental factors. Among the numerous variables influencing Hg fate in the environment, we only retain simple key indicators that are expected to influence Hg concentrations in fish tissue such as watershed characteristics of the lake (percentage of the catchment area of the lake, ratio of drainage area versus lake area, percentage of the drainage area of the lake as wetlands, land use, and clear-cutting), lake characteristics (chlorophyll, dissolved organic carbon, pH, and fishing intensity), and atmospheric Hg inputs. Preliminary results of modeling that we carried out using a set of Canadian lakes of boreal forest data are promising. With only a minimum set of criteria, we are able to reproduce the trends of Hg contamination in fish caught in six regions of the Canadian boreal forest and classify the sensitivity of the ecosystems to Hg loadings in three categories: high, medium, and low.

Hepatic delta 9 and delta 6 desaturase activities during the recovery period following carbon tetrachloride poisoning.

The liver microsomal delta 9 and delta 6 desaturase activities have been studied in rats with carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatitis. Immediately after poisoning, significant decreases were observed for both types of desaturase activity. However, recovery kinetics were slower for the delta 6 desaturase than for the delta 9 desaturase. The activities of NADH-ferricyanide and NADH-cytochrome C reductases, proteins involved in the electron transfers associated with microsomal desaturation, were also measured. There was a fall in both activities after poisoning, but this decrease was less than that of the desaturase activities.

Locally linear embedding for dimensionality reduction in QSAR.

Current practice in Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship (QSAR) methods usually involves generating a great number of chemical descriptors and then cutting them back with variable selection techniques. Variable selection is an effective method to reduce the dimensionality but may discard some valuable information. This paper introduces Locally Linear Embedding (LLE), a local non-linear dimensionality reduction technique, that can statistically discover a low-dimensional representation of the chemical data. LLE is shown to create more stable representations than other non-linear dimensionality reduction algorithms, and to be capable of capturing non-linearity in chemical data.
