The prevalence of ay and ad subtypes of the hepatitis B surface antigen in Belgium.

Subtyping in various groups of persons positive for hepatitis B surface antigen gave the following results: Among asymptomatic blood donors (healthy carriers) subtype ad was found in 20, subtype ay in 24. Among symptomatic patients with acute hepatitis B ad was found in 25, ay in 29. Among patients of an institution for the mentally retarded ad was found in 9, ay in 23. Among patients of a Among patients of a geriatric institution ay was found in 9; among medical personnel of the same geriatric institution ay was found in 3 persons. Among symphilis patients ad was found in 6, ay in 29; and in patients of a dialysis centre ay was found in 6. These data show that neither subtype is really dominant in Belgium.

Acute Disease

Methyl methanesulphonate mutagenesis in L5178Y mouse lymphoma cells.

The alkylating agent MMS was toxic to mouse lymphoma L5178Y cells and decreased their growth rate. A dose-dependent induction of thioguanine- and thymidine- but not ouabain-resistant variants was observed. The prolonged period for expression of thioguanine-resistant variants observed with other mutagens was also found in these studies. A comparison of MMS and EMS showed that MMS on a molar basis was approximately 10 times more toxic than EMS. With mutation, however, when evaluated at equal levels of cell killing MMS and EMS induced the same number of thymidine-resistant variants. For thioguanine-resistant variants MMS was approximately 10-fold less efficient than EMS, while for ouabain-resistance MMS, unlike EMBS, produced no variants at all. The ouabain results were further compared with positive results obtained using a modified Luria--Delbrück fluctuation test.

Cell Line

Clinical experience with trisomies 18 and 13.

The clinical, cytogenetic, dermatoglyphic, and postmortem observations of the 29 cases of trisomy 18 and 19 cases of trisomy 13 seen in the Department of Medical Genetics from 1963-76 are summarised. Chromosomes were studied in all and 30 were banded. One patient had tertiary trisomy 18 and 8 had translocations of chromosome 13. The features of these patients are described and the syndromes compared with each other and summaries found in the literature.

Chromosome Aberrations

An antigenic subunit present in rotavirus infected faeces.

It has been found by immune electron microscopy that rotavirus-infected faeces, calf or human, contain an antigenic subunit associated with the inner of the two virus capsids. This internal component represents the group specific antigen for the rotavirus group and the subunit reacts with both homologous and heterologous antiserum. It can therefore be used in diagnostic tests and in this paper its use as a reagent for immunodiffusion is described.

Animals

The fluctuation test as a more sensitive system for determining induced mutation in L5178Y mouse lymphoma cells.

Luria-Delbrück fluctuation tests for the determination of the spontaneous mutation rate to ouabain resistance incultured L5178Y mouse lymphoma cells gave values in the range 0.44 to 1.03 X 10(-7) mutants per cell per generation. Addition of very low, non-toxic, levels of EMS (0.1 mM) and MMS (0.012 mM) 30-48 h before plating in selective medium gave a highly significant increase in the number of ouabain-resistant mutants. Methods for the calculation of spontaneous and induced mutation rates are discussed and a method for the computation of induced mutation rates is described. It is suggested that the modified fluctuation test is a simpler and considerably more sensitive assay for mutagens than the conventional experimental design. Some of its limitations are discussed.

Cells, Cultured

Differences in the provision of mental health services by race.

A study of a newly mandated crisis clinic still shows the signs of a different quality of service offered to Third World clients. Black men in the present study had difficulty in obtaining the most needed and most preferred services. Reasons for the disparity in services appear to be institutional.
