[Stress proteins: expression of a universal phenomenon of cell defense].

Heat shock proteins or stress proteins play a role in adaptative thermotolerance. All cells, procaryotic and eucaryotic, are able to respond to different cellular aggressions by the synthesis of these stress proteins. In normal physiological conditions, they are considered as "molecular chaperones" Their actual role in pathology is still unknown; some of these heat shock proteins may be correlated with the degree of aggressiveness of some tumors.

Intracerebellar blastomycosis abscess in an African man.

The case of a solitary cerebellar abscess in a 36-year-old Rwandese male is described. First it was considered to be tuberculosis, but at microscopal examination of the lesion after neurosurgical excision the true germ was found: Blastomyces dermatitidis. This solitary intracerebellar blastomycosis abscess is only the fifth case reported worldwide and the first in African medical annals.

African histoplasmosis in a Belgian AIDS patient.

We describe an African histoplasmosis case in a 65-year-old Belgian living in Zaire for 46 years. Microscopic bone marrow examination showed Histoplasma. It was confirmed by cultures and hamster inoculation. Autopsy revealed a fungal dissemination by Histoplasma duboisii.

Trichoderma viride infection in a liver transplant recipient.

A liver transplant recipient developed infection of a perihepatic haematoma due to Trichoderma viride. Before the infection was diagnosed, the patient received intense immuno-suppressive and prolonged antibacterial and anti-fungal therapies. Although the death of the patient was not directly related to the fungal infection, abundant quantities of this pathogen were recovered in the haematoma at post-mortem examination, despite previous surgical removal and treatment with amphotericin B and fluconazole.
