The utility of Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale profile analysis with prisoners.

Determined the efficacy of profile analysis with a prison population (63 white, 63 black) of the Petersburg Federal Correctional Institution as Ss. By use of Veldman's Hierarchical Profile Analysis, five distinctive WAIS profile types were derived empirically for each racial group. Analyses of covariance that controlled for full-scale IQ differences revealed significant differences among the profile types within each race in terms of Stanford Achievement Test scores and MMPI T-scores. Further, partial correlations indepepdent of full-scale IQ revealed significant relationships between some of the profile types and the commission of rule infractions while incarcerated. These findings are interpreted as supportive of profile analysis with inmate populations. However, it is suggested that further research be effected to cross-validate these findings.

Exploration of a live-together-group-together paradigm with incarcerated drug offenders.

Prisoners who both participated in biweekly, biracial therapy groups and lived together in large cubicles were compared with prisoners who grouped but did not live together. Results suggested: (1) greater group cohesion among inmates who lived and grouped together, (2) greater acceptance of Blacks by Whites exposed to the cubicle system, and (3) that the structure of measures used in studies of this nature may affect results appreciably. Implications for correctional treatment and future research are discussed.

Modification of smoking behaviors in a correctional institution.

Effected two studies in a prison setting to determine the effectiveness of self-control procedures with institutionalized cigarette smokers. In Study I, 14 male inmates were given instruction in self-control techniques. The 6 inmates who completed treatment manifested significant reductions in their cigarette smoking. Intercorrelations between goal setting and smoking rates suggested the efficacy of a changing criterion schedule. A second study replicated Study I and suggested an appreciable (p less than .06) locus of control X type of goal setting (therapist vs. client) interaction. Study II also showed: (1) some components of treatment were perceived as significantly more helpful than others; (2) self-control treatment seemed effective with a pipe smoker; and (3) in comparison to Study I a relatively low drop-out rate occurred in this study, which used a contracting procedure to discourage drop-outs. Results are discussed in terms of treatment implications for inmate smokers, and suggestions for further research were provided.

The utility of two Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale short forms with prisoners.

Previous research has suggested that the Pauker (1963) and Satz and Mogul (1962) short forms of the WAIS have been efficacious in estimating the standard form. While there is a growing need in correctional settings for quicker evaluation procedures, the lack of WAIS short form research with prisoners prohibits their use with such populations. Hence, this study employed 126 young adult male inmates to test the comparability of the above cited short forms and the standard WAIS across a variety of evaluative criteria. The results generally suggested the superiority of the Pauker (1963) form in estimating the standard WAIS. However, because the current study employed only black and white young male offenders it is suggested that the current findings not be generalized to other age groups, races, or women inmates until these findings are cross-validated on such samples.

The effects of surgery-induced stress on anxiety as measured by the Holtzman Inkblot Technique.

Form A of the Holtzman Inkblot Technique (HIT) was administered to 45 subjects approximately 24 hours prior to a surgical operation and Form B of the HIT was administered after surgery. A-State and A-trait were monitored by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) pre- and postsurgery. STAI A-State scores declined and STAI A-Trait scores remained stable from pre- to postsurgery. Among selected HIT variables, only Barrier scores remained stable and correlated (negatively) with STAI A-Trait scores. No HIT variables changed across periods and were correlated with STAI A-State scores obtained concurrently. Employing a multiple regression approach, a three-variable prediction model was derived for A-State and six-variable model was derived for A-Trait. In addition, the implications of the high number of rejected cards obtained in this study were discussed in terms of the possible inappropriateness of the HIT as an assessment tool under conditions of high situational stress.

The validity of the Rorschach Prognostic Rating Scale with incarcerated offenders.

Previous research has shown that the Rorschach Prognostic Rating Scale reliably predicts the adjustment capacity of various S types to a variety of situations. The present study investigated the efficacy of the RPRS to suggest the adjustment capacity of prisoners to various aspects of their institutional environment. Twenty-five male inmates of the Petersburg Federal Reformatory served as Ss. Group therapy, dormitory behavior, work progress adjustment ratings, and RPRS scores were obtained for each S. Intercorrelations among the adjustment measures and the RPRS total and component scores revealed no significant correlations between the adjustment measures and the RPRS total score. However, in employing a moximum R stepwise multiple correlation procedure with the RPRS compontnts, significant multiple Rs resulted for two of the three criterion measures. These results were discussed in terms of the earlier research with the RPRS, and suggestions for future research were made.

The predictive efficacy of three MMPI short forms.

In order to investigate the predictive efficacy of three MMPI short forms, the standard form answer sheets of 50 inmate volunteers and 44 clinic outpatients were scored separately for Faschingbauer's, Hugo's and Mini-Mult scales. T-score correlations and t tests between the standard form and each short form, as well as comparisons using Lacks' criteria were reported. Results indicated that the Faschingbauer form was superior to the other two forms. Results were discussed in terms of the populations tested and in reference to the different methodologies used in developing each of the short forms.
