Use of the Hickman catheter for the treatment of lower extremity infections.

The authors discuss the use of a cuffed, Silastic catheter, which can be of great value in the reduction of morbidity when dealing with lower extremity infections. When a patient's condition demands the use of long-term antibiotic and/or aminoglyoside therapy, this indwelling central venous catheter can allow easy access to the vascular system and markedly decrease the amount of time the patient has to stay in the hospital. This form of therapy involves the patient in the treatment and displays no mortality and minimal morbidity associated with catheter placement and care.

Cryotherapy in the postoperative setting.

Cryotherapy, the use of ice as a treatment modality, is discussed as it applies to the postoperative podiatric patient. The physiologic effects of ice are given, as well as methods and duration of application. Complications resulting from and contraindications to the use of ice are also discussed.

Syndactylization: a surgical approach to heloma molle.

Surgical syndactylism is reviewed as an alternative method of treatment for heloma molle of the fourth interspace. This is achieved by excision of the apposing skin surfaces between the fourth and fifth toes. By maintaining intimate apposition of the two toes, permanent syndactylism of the interdigital space is achieved, therefore preventing reformation of the heloma molle.
