[Orthodontic treatment as prevention of periodontal changes].

Even the general dental practitioners consider the orthodontic therapeutical interventions carried out with removable appliances as a harmful procedure. It is much less known how the lack of adequate orthodontic treatment endangers the peridontium. Clinical data show a cause related correlation between the maxillary incisor protrusion, mandibular frontal jammed dentition, deep vertical overbite, openbite, crossbite early deciduous tooth extractions and the periodontal pathological happenings. So it is very important to start an early orthodontic treatment to avoid the periodontal consequences of malocclusion before it has become irreversible.

Fine structure of multiple neonatal haemangioendothelioma of the liver.

This paper discusses the fine structure of multiple haemangioendothelioma of the liver. There have been no previous reports of electron microscopic studies of this tumour, which was found to be composed of young capillaries continuous in type and varying in calibre. The capillaries were lined by actively proliferating, immature endothelial cells with pericytes forming an integral part of the tumour. Their morphological characteristics indicated intensive protein production. The authors suggest that the active pericytes play a role in the production of reticular fibres of the tumour. Following corticosteroid therapy, regression of tumour nodules occurred in this case in the interval between surgery and autopsy. This was confirmed by histological studies. The results seem to support the hypothesis that actively proliferating, young endothelial cells show an increased sensitivity to corticosteroids.

Reflex bradycardia: a grave complication of oesophageal atresia repair.

Among 39 infants operated upon for oesophageal atresia in newborn age, 5 presented attacks of reflex bradycardia during meals. One patient died at the age of one and a half years. Four patients became symptom-free on atropine treatment. They are healthy and develop satisfactorily.

[Results with multi-band appliances in the treatment of class II].

Corrections of Angle's Class II malocclusions constitute nearly 1/4 of the treatments performed by the orthodontist. The author studied the results achieved with treatment methods applicable to these malocclusions and compared them with those obtained by means of multiband appliances. On the basis of 2,110 cases, he establishes the indications for the use of multiband appliances in the framework of social dental treatment.

Mesenteric vascular occlusion in infants and children: report of two cases and review of the literature.

Mesenteric vascular occlusion is a rare disease in the paediatric age group. The pertaining literature is reviewed and two cases are reported. In the first one the vascular obstruction developed after a Wilms tumour on the right side had been removed. Following bowel resection and end-to-end anastomosis the patient died of uraemia. Post mortem examination revealed a diffuse membranous glomerulonephritis and pseudoxanthomatosis in the remaining left kidney, the function of which had probably been affected by the shock associated with mesenteric thrombosis. In the second case a mixed mesenteric vascular occlusion was found without any previous disease; after ileal resection and ileo-coecal anastomosis the baby made a smooth recovery.
