[Occupationally-induced liver damage--vinyl chloride-induced angiosarcoma].

A 45-year-old chemical worker (exposure to vinyl chloride: 500-1612 mg VC/m3 over 248 months) fell ill with a haemangiosarcoma of the liver. This is the first case observed in workers exposed to VC in East Germany. We did not succeed in making the definite histological diagnosis until after the patient's death. The first pathological findings were revealed through the increase in the gamma glutamyl transpeptidase, through sonography and computer tomography of the liver. Numerous tumor biopsies produced either no material or healthy liver tissue, which led to difficulties in therapy. The only chance of effective treatment is an early liver transplantation.

[Treatment of mercury-induced organ damage].

At the instance of a case of severe Hg-induced proteinuria the efficiency of a complex former therapy with sulfactin (BAL) is demonstrated, which led to the complete elimination of the protein excretion in the urine. For this other possibilities of a complex-forming therapy for hydrargyrism are discussed and consequences for the occupational-medical and clinical treatment are shown.

[Cytochrome P-450 dependent drug metabolism--use of an in vitro test system in multiple chemical exposure].

Investigations of the influence of an actual exposure on the in-vitro-activities and the inducibility of cytochrom P-450 dependent enzymes have not been described in the literature until now. First results gained from mitogen-stimulated lymphocytes of exposed and not-exposed individuals suggest such an influence of the given mixture of noxious agents on the basic deethylational ability of the examined cells acting in the sense of inhibition. Possible causes for this phenomenon are discussed.

[The antipyrine test in occupational medicine research--evaluation of individual reproducibility and frequency distribution of half-life].

The antipyrine half-life is a reliable index of biotransformation capacity of the liver. The half-lives were estimated in 137 subjects; the result was a logarithmic normal distribution of these parameters. Therefore our patients were subdivided into groups of so-called fast, intermediate and slow metabolisers (fast: t50 less than 7.6 h and slow: t50 greater than 14.9 h). Under conditions given here the intraindividual coefficient of variation was about 11.5%. The antipyrine elimination curves were calculated by a computer programme and the values were analysed statistically.

[The importance of liver changes in workers with chronic benzene exposure].

Essential parameters of hepatic functioning in 84 labourers, whose exposition to benzene is differing in assimilation as well as length of time is discussed.--45 persons from the same county without contact to benzene or hepatotoxic agents served as control-group. Neither long-term exposure to benzene nor its size were of any influence on the hepatic data controlled.--Correlations became evident in non-occupational factors such as alcoholism and overweight.--Any damaging effect of benzene on the liver can be excluded.
