New structural details of dermal lymphatic valves and its functional interpretation.

Dermal lymphatics (rat and human) were studied electronmicroscopically and changes within the lymphatic wall including neoformation of intralymphatic valves were followed by serial sections. Two new forms of intralymphatic valves were observed-unicellular valve or single endothelial cell extension deep into the lymphatic lumen and bunch valve, or a connective tissue core with numerous tip-cells at its cuspidal edge. These structures functioned as "flap" or "helper" valves and like inlet (intramural) valves, they were variable structures appearing and disappearing with changes in the local interstitial environment. Lymphatic capillaries probably act as microscopic pistons to pump and suction lymph fluid in a centripetal direction.

The structure and dynamic function of the dermal lymphatic capillaries.

Intraluminal valves are present in dermal lymphatic capillaries. It is postulated that, according to the phase of filling or emptying, new valves can be formed by the connective tissue and the endothelial cells which extend into the lumen. They might be called helper-valves.

Pityriasis rosea in a patient with epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica.

A patient with clinical and histologic features of epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica-recessive (EBD-R) developed superimposed clinical lesions of pityriasis rosea (PR). Electron microscopy showed distinct "blebbing" of basal cells at the basement membrane zone in clinically normal skin of a non-predilected area, as well as in scarred skin from a predilected area and a lesion of PR. An increased susceptibility of the basement membrane zone to proteolytic enzymes is suggested as a possible hypothesis to explain these observations.
