Short- and long-term effects of hypophysectomy and unilateral ovariectomy on ovarian follicular populations in sheep.

The effects of hypophysectomy and unilateral ovariectomy on the total number of follicles with greater than 3 layers of granulosa cells were determined at 4 and 70 days following treatment. The population of preantral follicles (less than 0.23 min diam.) was found to be under the control of gonadotrophins but such control was only evident on a long-term basis. At 70 days after unilateral ovariectomy there was a large increase in the number of preantral follicles but at 70 days after hypophysectomy there was a large decrease. The population of antral follicles (greater than 0.23 mm diam.) was under the immediate control of gonadotrophins. By 4 days after hypophysectomy all large antral follicles had become atretic and the number of antral follicles was further decreased at 70 days after treatment. At 70 days after unilateral ovariectomy there was an increase in the number of antral follicles. The follicular growth rates at 70 days following treatment were decreased in hypophysectomized ewes but increased in ewes after unilateral ovariectomy.

[Demonstration by the analysis of principal components of the of the equivalence of two models of clonal survival].

The principal component analysis of 21 chlorella cell survival curves, adjusted by one-hit and two-hit target models, lead to quite similar projections on the principal plan: the homologous parameters of these models are linearly correlated; the reason for the statistical equivalence of these two models, in the present state of experimental inaccuracy, is revealed.

[Fate of the two largest ovarian follicles of sheep following destruction of the largest follicle and/or the removal of the corpus luteum at two times in the cycle].

Marking of the largest (F1) and the second largest (F2) follicles of the ovaries of the sheep with India ink has allowed us to observe the fate of these follicles after different treatments. All the F1 and F2 follicles of the controls marked on the 10th day of the cycle became atretic, but when the marking was done on the 14th day, only the F1 (of the marked follicles) ovulated. Destruction of the F1 with or without removal of the corporalutea allowed some of the F2 to ovulate, wheras only removal of the corpora lutea decreased the number of F1 ovulating. It thus appears that the fate of the F1 is related to the time of the cycle and that the F1 could have an inhibitory effect on the ovulation of the F2. Removal of the corpora lutea also induced the development of several cystic follicles and decreased the total ovulation rate.

[Surgical problems. (Apropos of reoperations in abdominal surgery)].

Out of 1,500 laparotomies carried out between january 1970 and december 1973, 49 patients, i.e. 3.2 p. 100 underwent 61 reinterventions: one out of three patients died. Almost 60 p. 100 of these patients who had undergone operations had essentially parietal complications. The authors analyze the different syndromes which had led to the reintervention while making a special place for parietal problems.
