[Specific immunological profile of candidates for hepatitis A].

Blood samples were taken from 1,279 healthy adults for radioimmunological studies before their collective departure to an endemic area and received an administration of polyvalent immunoglobin for hepatitis A prophylaxis. On the 120th day, 1,220 subjects were in good health and their serum was studied again. Hepatitis A was observed in 59 cases, confirmed either by the presence of virus in the stool or by the demonstration of anti-HAV IgM, when other causes of hepatitis had been excluded. The following results were observed in the two groups: a) Subjects having HAV antibodies with a titre of about 1:100 in the initial blood samples had a reduced risk of hepatitis. Subjects with lower titres and, paradoxically, with higher titres, had a significantly higher risk. b) Markers of HBV were less commonly present in the initial blood samples of subjects who did not develop hepatitis. c) Low titres of HAV antibodies (less than 20) were commonly associated with markers of HBV in the initial samples of subjects who developed hepatitis. This suggests either a congenital susceptibility to infection to both viruses or that prior HBV infection increases the risk of HAV infection.

[Two useful indicators for the alimentary surveys in Africa (author's transl)].

The authors propose two useful indicators of the alimentary consumption of suburban families. The first one relates to the "daily alimentary budget per person" and they provide a form to get it and a method to question the results. The second one relates to a semi-quantitative estimation of the amount of animal proteins (meat, fish, egg) daily provided to the infants, as estimated with respect to two thresholds. They question their method for collecting the data and find it reliable.

[Quantitative study of alpha-1-antitrypsin in an ethnic group of Ivory Coast: the Abrons].

A logarithmic-normal distribution of the concentrations of alpha1AT in 578 Abrons in Ivory Coast was found. A significant, negative logarithmic regression of alpha1AT rates according to age is demonstrated. alpha1AT rate = 0,376 (log age) + 3,003 The quantitative analysis by immunoprecipitation of Technicon only does not permit a definitive conclusion as to the presence of allele Z.

[Simultaneous vaccination with BCG and measles vaccine: results of a controlled trial].

The main purpose of the controled assay on a combination of B.C.G. and measles vaccine was to ascertain whether these two vaccines could be administered on young children in simultaneous injections, in two different parts of the body and on the same day, and whether in that case they led to rates of haemagglutination inhibitory antibodies against measles on the one hand, and induration diameters of Mantoux's intradermoreactions against B.C.G. on the other, not inferior to rates and diameters obtained when using the same vaccines separately. This survey, carried out in Cameroon, involved one thousand individuals. It confirms the suggestion that the two vaccinations may be carried out simultaneously when circumstances require an early and total protection of a child population with minimum sanitary stress.

[A serological survey of rubella among pregnant women in Abidjan (author's transl)].

A serological survey about the prevalence of the rubella hemagglutination inhibiting antibodies among the pregnant women in Abidjan during the year 1975 has shown an average rate of seroconversion of 84 p. 100. This rate depends on age and increases from 70 to 80 p. 100 between 15 and 35 years old. A regression line is fitted, and the goodness of fit is tested. These rates are in accordance with what is presently observed in America, in Europe and in Australia.
