Percutaneous trephine lung biopsy: evolving role.

The Steele trephine was employed to perform 134 transthoracic biopsies in 120 patients. Resultant cores of tissue and "lung juice" provided a diagnosis in 89 percent (107) of the patients. Complications occurred in 41 percent (49) of the patients, the incidence being greatest in those with diffuse parenchymal disease. Most complications were of a minor nature. Although the precise role of trephine lung biopsy in the physician's diagnostic armamentarium remains to be defined, there is no doubt that it is a useful and safe technique in the elucidation of intrathoracic disease.

A radiological and clinical correlative study of laryngeal abnormalities seen in Northern Alberta.

Contrast laryngograms performed on 50 patients referred to the radiology department of University Hospital between 1967 and 1973 were correlated with the direct laryngoscopic and pathological findings. Not a single malignancy in this series was missed radiologically, but in three out of 32 cases, the radiological extent of these lesions was considered more advanced than the pathology results. All patients with proven chronic inflammations, had symptoms of carcinomas of the larynx. No false positive carcinomas were diagnosed laryngographically in this group. In a patient with the nasopharyngeal carcinoma and in a case of myasthenia laryngis the radiological diagnosis would probably not have been misinterpreted if clinical histories were obtained prior to laryngography.

Evaluation of on-campus continuing medical education programs in Alberta.

Seven on-campus continuing medical education programs offered during the 1971-72 academic year were evaluated. A multiple-choice examination was taken by the participants before each course; the same examination was administered immediately after the course was completed, and a third examination was taken three to five months later. It was found that for each course there was a significant increase in knowledge at both post-testing periods. A questionnaire developed for the purpose of determining the effectiveness of the courses was also administered at the time of the third test, and exhibited reasonable degrees of reliability and validity. A large proportion of the participants indicated the content of their courses was relevant and necessary, and was being used in their medical practice. It was concluded that the effectiveness of these programs justified their continuation.
