Serological evidence of Ehrlichia spp. exposure in cats from northeastern Spain.

There is little information about Ehrlichia canis as an infectious agent in cats. In order to estimate the prevalence of antibodies to E. canis in the feline population, 235 cat sera were analysed by indirect fluorescent-antibody test. With the objective to determine some risk factors associated with seropositivity, serum samples were divided into two groups: urban stray cats and pet cats. The seroprevalence detected was 17.9%. Most positive sera (83.3%) showed low antibody titres (<1:80). Seropositivity was very similar when comparing the two groups of animals: 17.4% in urban stray cats and 18.4% in pet cats. Results revealed that cats are exposed to Ehrlichia spp. infection, as the low antibody titres detected and the serological cross-reactivity between Ehrlichia species do not allow us to confirm E. canis exposure.

Processing of crawfish (Procambarus clarkii) for the preparation of carotenoproteins and chitin.

Crawfish carotenoproteins and chitin are obtained by a combined process based on flotation-sedimentation and in situ lactic acid production. The carotenoprotein PF(1) obtained has a high content in essential amino acids, w-3-fatty acids, and carotene (mainly astaxanthin) and constitutes an excellent nutritional source for patients with malnutrition. The carotenoprotein PF(2) has a lower nutritional quality but with a substantial carotene content can be used as a feed for animals where coloration is required, such as salmon and trout bred under aquaculture. Chemical and spectrometric (FTIR and (13)C NMR) characterization shows the obtained chitin to be of high quality, similar to that available commercially, for medical and nutritional uses.

In vivo and in vitro sensitivity of Trichomonas gallinae to some nitroimidazole drugs.

A study was carried out in order to establish the in vivo efficacy of two nitroimidazole drugs against the flagellate Trichomonas gallinae. The results obtained showed a high proportion of therapeutic failures. Thus, carnidazole and dimetridazole failed to eliminate infection in 13 of 17 and 20 of 21 racing pigeons, respectively. The in vitro susceptibility of four T. gallinae isolates to five nitroimidazolic drugs, that is, carnidazole, dimetridazole, metronidazole, ornidazole and ronidazole, was also determined. Minimal lethal concentrations (MLCs) of these drugs were obtained. One of the isolates tested had already proved to be resistant in the first in vivo tests, while the other three had been obtained from wild birds. We were able to confirm in vitro the resistance of the racing pigeon isolate to all the nitroimidazole drugs tested. For carnidazole, dimetridazole, metronidazole and ornidazole the MLC ranged between 93.75-500 microg ml. Although ronidazole showed a greater potency than the other nitroimidazole derivatives against this isolate (MLC: 15.62-31.25 microg ml), 8-22 times more drug was necessary for efficacy against this isolate compared to the others. These other three parasite isolates proved to be sensitive to the five drugs tested (MLC: 0.97-7.81 microg ml).

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy pain reduction by local bupivacaine infiltration in children.

Experimental data in humans and animals suggest that during surgery, pain impulses enter the CNS creating a hyperexcitable state in spite of general anesthesia. In a prospective double blind study, pain levels in 22 children undergoing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy under general anesthesia were compared from day of surgery to Day 10. Patients received pre-incisional infiltration with either bupivacaine (A) or saline (B). Subjective pain was assessed by visual analog scale, and objective pain by deglutition time (100 ml). Subjective constant pain was less (P < 0.05) in group (A) on Day 1: 16 (A) vs. 59 (B) and Day 5: 4 (A) vs. 45 (B). We conclude that local nerve blockade by bupivacaine reduces short- and long-term pain in children undergoing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy in the presence of general anesthesia.

Christmas bow tragedies.

Two cases of fatal accidents involving plastic buttons from Christmas bows are described. Although accidents are the commonest cause of death in children less than 3 years old, governmental mechanisms, properly enforced, can be instrumental in preventing such catastrophies.
