Object encoding, goal similarity, and analogical transfer.

Although the importance of goal similarity and similarity of encoding are well known in analogical transfer literature, there has never been a study in which one of these factors was maintained constant and the other manipulated. This point was studied in our first experiment. The results show that the interaction between the two factors is not significant. However, the width of the credibility intervals suggests that it is difficult to conclude that there is either a presence or an absence of an interaction. The second experiment concerned more directly the impact of the encoding process on recognition of analogy. The results show that analogical transfer can be highly dependent on the way subjects interpret problems and that the encoding process can be influenced by the visual characteristics of the problems. These results can be related to a recent body of research on the importance of interpretive effects on analogy, as well as to the categorization literature.

Bacterial toxins modifying the actin cytoskeleton.

Numerous bacterial toxins recognize the actin cytoskeleton as a target. The clostridial binary toxins (Iota and C2 families) ADP-ribosylate the actin monomers causing the dissociation of the actin filaments. The large clostridial toxins from Clostridium difficile, Clostridium sordellii and Clostridium novyi inactivate, by glucosylation, proteins from the Rho family that regulate actin polymerization. In contrast, the cytotoxic necrotic factor from Escherichia coli activates Rho by deamidation and increases the formation of actin filaments. The enterotoxin of Bacteroides fragilis is a protease specific for E-cadherin and it promotes the reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton. The bacterial toxins that modify the actin cytoskeleton induce various cell disfunctions including changes in cell barrier permeability and disruption of intercellular junctions.

Analogical transfer as guided by an abstraction process: the case of learning by doing in text editing.

The authors proposed that not only are the first attempts to solve a problem made by analogy but also that progress in learning can be guided by referring to more abstract knowledge, which affords new possibilities. Two experiments investigated this view in a situation of learning how to use a text editor. Experiments 1A to 1C identified the knowledge associated with 3 domains hypothesized as sources of transfer at increasing levels of abstraction (typewriting, writing in general, manipulating objects). Experiment 2 tested whether participants first use their knowledge about typewriting, then about writing in general, and then about manipulating objects. The data showed that the order of acquisition of text editor functions appeared to be strongly related to this hierarchy, supporting the idea that part of learning consists of discovering properties of objects by accessing increasingly general domains.

[Antral exclusion. A complement to palliative gastrojejunal shunt in pancreatic cancer].

OBJECTIVES: Prophylactic gastrojejunostomy remains a controversial issue in the management of unresectable pancreatic cancer. The main disadvantage of the gastrojejunostomy being the postoperative delayed gastric emptying (gastroparesia and circulus vitiosus through the nonobstructed duodenum). In the aim to reduce the effects of delayed gastric emptying we advocated the adjunct of an antral exclusion to simplify antrectomy by eliminating antral dysfunction and duodenal circulus vitiosus. METHODS: The procedure of antral exclusion was performed using a 4-row linear stapler. The gastrojejunostomy was immediately proximal to the staples row. RESULTS: Preliminary results in 6 patients, evaluated by clinical follow up, radiologic and radionucleide studies, showed no delayed gastric emptying nor other postoperative complications related to this technique. CONCLUSION: These preliminary results are encouraging and suggest that this procedure could improve the functional results of the prophylactic gastrojejunostomy.

Polypoid formations at the anal margin in infants less than two years old.

Polypoid formations in the anal canal and at the anal margin are sometimes observed in the newborn and in infants less than 2 years old. Unlike hamartomatous polyps, which are commonly reported in infantile proctology, these growths are rare in early childhood. Only by performing a pathological anatomy examination is it possible to determine the nature of the numerous affections encountered to assess prognosis and to decide on suitable therapeutic management.

[Actinomycosis: value of percutaneous drainage of intra-abdominal abscesses].

Abdominal actinomycosis was localized in the liver with intra-abdominal abscesses. The disease had evolved for several years before diagnosis. Percutaneous interventional radiology allowed taking biopsies which confirmed the diagnosis. Percutaneous drainage of the intra-abdominal abscesses with antibiotherapy was successful without iterative surgery.

[Association of breast cancer and cancer of the uterus. 34 case reports].

A retrospective series of 34 cases of breast cancer combined with uterine cancer is reported. Cancers of the endometrium differed from cervical cancers by their number, 2.2 x more frequent (22 vs 10) and by the sequence of onset: they generally precede breast cancer, whereas they tend to follow cervical cancers. In contrast to the breast cancer/uterine cervical cancer association, which is considered to be fortuitous, the breast cancer/cancer of the uterine body association appears to be determined by a hormonal context. Through a review of the literature, a unifying endocrine theory is constructed, based on the role of hyperestrogenesis in mammary and endometrial carcinogenesis.
