Laser-assisted TURP.

This article describes an interesting technique combining laser coagulation and vaporization using the Nd/YAG laser followed by standard electroresection (TURP) to allow an essentially catheter free postoperative course, early return to normal activity, < 24-h hospitalization, and decreased intraoperative and postoperative complications. Combining the two laser techniques with TURP, eliminates the problems and complications that are associated with any of these procedures individually.

Laparoscopic renal exploration and biopsy.

A new and novel technique to obtain renal biopsy specimens using laparoscopy is presented. In some patients there are contraindications to obtaining biopsy material through standard percutaneous techniques. Open renal biopsy has been the procedure of choice in these patients. The laparoscopic approach can accomplish the same surgical objectives as open renal biopsy without the associated morbidity. This report discusses the indications, contraindications, materials, methods, and techniques associated with this new procedure.

Ureteral ectopia presenting as epididymitis and infertility.

A thirty-two-year-old man presented with a history of infertility, recurrent epididymitis, and a fluctuant pelvic mass on rectal examination. Preoperative evaluation disclosed a nonvisualized right kidney and a multiloculated cystic lesion in the pelvis. The intravenous pyelogram suggested a ureterocele on the right side. A cystic pelvic mass was noted on ultrasound and computed tomography. A dysplastic right kidney with an ectopic ureter inserting into a cystic seminal vesicle was found at surgical exploration.
