This is a pilot study by UICTMR on smoking habits in medical students carried out in five countries before a world study is undertaken. Smoking habits are already established for first year medical students and for fifth year medical students of both sexes. Cessation of smoking, however, is common in the young. One smoker in two hopes to stop. Knowledge of the dangers of smoking is reasonably good. However the study shows, above all, that students have not integrated into the medical field the education about and prevention of smoking, and they appear limited in their openness to the broader conceptions of Public Health.

The thought of this work about the mad senile person's affective life concerns some almost permanent clinical establishments such as: on one hand, the existence of late-life companions and inanimate objects evoking some phenomena met during childhood: fancied companion, fetish objects. On the other hand, the existence of "behaviours" evoking those of the little child during his psycho-affective development. We have been led to study the notion of regression during the dementia process and ask ourselves about psychopathological mechanisms underlying this regression, regarded as a mechanism of narcissistic strengthening underlying the appearance of late-life companion or inanimate object. We underline in the conclusion that: on one hand, for these persons showing a deep disturbance of narcissistic economy, there is need to elaborate a relation with a narcissistic object, according to the somato-psychic deterioration level. On the other hand, the phenomena established during the dementia process, can't be assimilated to opposite distance covered by progressive movement.

Using the data of the French Cooperative Study PAARC (Pollution Atmosphérique et Affections Respiratoires Chroniques), which in 1975 surveyed more than 7800 adult residents of seven cities throughout France, the authors compared the spirometric measurements of two groups of nonsmokers: those with and without exposure to passive smoking in the home. They restricted the analysis to subjects aged 40 years of more (i.e., those presumably exposed for 15 years or more to smoking by their spouses) and who were living in households without other persons aged 18 years or older (to avoid potential misclassification as true nonsmokers of persons living with non-interviewed individuals). The authors found that nonsmoking subjects of either sex whose spouses were current smokers of at least 10 g of tobacco a day had significantly lower forced mid-expiratory flow rate (FEF25-75) than those married to nonsmokers. This difference was not explained by social class, educational level, air pollution, or family size. Women, among whom passive smoking is much more prevalent than it is among men, also showed a significant difference in forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), and a clear dose-effect relationship to amount of smoking by their husbands was found in the large subgroup of women without paid work (i.e., those not exposed to workplace smoking).
The aim of this work was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of antimicrobial vaccination in patients suffering from chronic bronchopathies. We proposed this vaccination to 40 patients divided into two groups: one received either the bacterial suspension or ribosomal extracts; the other was given a Placebo. The effectiveness of the vaccination in reflected mainly by the statistically significant decrease in the number of infectious outbreaks and in antibiotic consumption in winter as compared to a control group receiving only a Placebo.
The authors present scales of reference theoretical values for children and peak expiratory output (V 50 and V 25), as well as FEV1 and vital capacity obtained by flow-volume curves. After a description of the equipment (adaptable to on-the-spot epidemiological studies), the reference population (537 children, male and female, 6-16 years old), and the method of curve applications, the statistical basis for devising the scale was analyzed. Under study were the following topics: assuming an exponential regression model, advantages of the consideration of two reference parameters (age and size), or of one (size), which was the solution adopted finally to construct the scale. The comparison of our work with that described in the literature for groups of children with widely diversified origins points out the differences in certain functional parameters themselves. Thus, the interest of establishing scales for an epidemiological program based on populations with features as close as possible to those of the groups under study is justified.

The authors, following prolonged observation for from one to ten years, on average 5 years, of 60 cases of thoracic sarcoidosis, of lymph node or miliary type, propose a therapeutic attitude which, although not new, is frankly oriented towards therapeutic abstinence in the lymph node forms, and very restricted indications for hormone therapy in the miliary forms. In this respect, they agree with many authors, in particular English language authors, who consider that corticosteroid therapy is only justified in the acute forms, with a disturbance of general health and characteristic functional involvement. Such an attitude may appear shocking to those who tend to prescribe corticosteroids for their immediate efficacy, but in the long-term, it appears justified.

In a sample of 2792 community dwellers, aged 65 and over, randomly selected in an administrative area of southwestern France, eight items of the functional assessment scales had an independent association with dyspnoea, adjusting for age, visual or hearing impairments, depressive symptomatology, and cognitive impairment. These eight items included: two activities of daily living (dressing and continence), two instrumental activities of daily living (shopping and use of transportation), three Rosow items (walking half a mile, climbing stairs, and doing heavy housework), and a mobility scale. Disability increased with breathlessness grade in each of these items, but with different patterns, suggesting a hierarchical relationship between some Rosow, IADL and ADL items for the association of dyspnoea with disability.
