Computerized 3-dimensional analysis of mitochondrial structure.

A computer program has been written to calculate surface area and volume of subcellular organelles. Sophisticated and extremely accurate point sampling routines and volume computational techniques have been developed. This program has been used to study mitochondrial 3-dimensional structure when stereological estimates have proven inadequate.

Six-year program shows benefits of shared laboratory services.

The VA Hospital in Columbia, MO, and the University of Missouri Medical Center conduct the largest shared laboratory service in the VA hospital system. Sharing has enabled these institutions to eliminate unnecessary duplication of resources, develop new laboratory capabilities in subspecialties, handle additional routine procedures, better use the expertise of senior staff pathologists, develop uniform standards, enhance quality assessment, and expand training programs.

A teen-ager with 46,X,del(X)(q21).

A 19-year-old woman has a chromosome constitution of 46,X,del (X) (pter leads to q21:). X chromatin masses seen in buccal smears were fewer and smaller than normal. The deleted X has more darkly stained regions around the centromere, and the short arm is also shorter. She is 155.5 cm tall and the breasts are normally developed, as are the external genitalia; however, she had primary amenorrhea. There are no evocative somatic malformation of Turner's syndrome.

Relationship between pancreatic lesions and serum glucose values in Mystromys albicaudatus.

Serum glucose levels and pancreatic islet cell changes were studied in combination in 127 Mystromys albicaudatus in an effort to develop better criteria for defining diabetes mellitus in thiss rodent. The study supports a previous report in which 170 mg/100 ml was selected as indicative of hyperglycemia based on statistical analysis of serum glucose distributions. The presence of exceptions to predicted correlations between islet cell changes and serum glucose levels was identified for further study.

Glomerular lesions of diabetes mellitus in Mystromys albicaudatus.

The kidneys of 175 nondiabetic and diabetic Mystromys albicaudatus were evaluated histologically by light microscopy. The degree of capillary basement membrane thickening and the predominant glomerular histologic pattern were recorded. Statistical analyses indicated that glomerulosclerosis is associated with diabetes in this species. In addition, a granular capillary basement membrane lesion occurred more frequently in diabetic than in nondiabetic animals.

XO/XY mosaicism in a 2 year phenotypic male.

A 2-year-old male with bilateral undescended gonads, hypoplastic external auditory canals, large umbilical hernia and XO/XY chromosome mosaicism is described in this communication. Salient features of other similar cases, i.e. XO/XY mosaicism in phenotypic males, from the literature are summarized, showing the wide diversity of manifestations of this syndrome.
