Application of an attribution-affect-action model of caregiving behavior.

An attribution model was used to examine how staff perceptions of behavior of a resident with Alzheimer's disease influenced the way the behavior was managed. A sample of 54 female nursing staff members responded to a vignette describing a caregiving situation of a demented resident who was not feeding himself or herself. Caregiver attribution of resident behavior to reversible causes significantly predicted expectations for improved self-feeding in the future, and future expectations for self-feeding were significantly related to caregiving behavior to encourage self-feeding. Caregivers expected greater participation in self-feeding by female residents than by male residents.

An attributional analysis of formal caregivers' perceptions of agitated behavior of a resident with Alzheimer's disease.

This study uses an attributional framework to examine the relationships between attributions, feelings, expectations, and caregiving behaviors of 49 dementia caregivers. Principal components factor analysis was used to reduce attribution, feeling, expectation, and caregiver behavior items to their basic components. A series of multiple regressions was used to analyze the data. Attributions were a significant predictor of preventable/reversible expectations, with specific causation being the strongest predictor. Attributions were also a significant predictor of expectations of limited predictability and controllability, with general causation being the explanatory variable. Findings support the importance of examination of attributions and their impacts.

Geropsychiatric nursing: focus and setting.

Derivation of theoretic frameworks unique to psychiatric mental health nursing practice is dependent on locating and evaluating contextual bases of practice. The purpose of this report is to provide evidence indicating that chronically mentally ill elderly patients in nursing homes must be considered as one such contextual base of practice, and that the symptomatic behaviors of this population must be regarded as a phenomena of concern. Furthermore, it is suggested that psychiatric mental health nurses can generate practice-relevant knowledge by using an ecologic orientation as a framework for the study of the phenomena of symptomatic behaviors in this population.

Peer rejection and neglect of latency-age children: pathways and a group psychotherapy model.

TOPIC: Children's peer relations are one of the most powerful predictors of mental health PROBLEMS: Peer rejection and neglect are associated with depression, academic problems, school withdrawal, and delinquency. PURPOSE: To provide brief introductions to models of social development and peer rejection, and to introduce a developmental-group psychotherapy model for children experiencing peer neglect or rejection. SOURCES: Theoretical and empirical literature, as well as clinical experience. CONCLUSIONS: Early identification and intervention with children vulnerable to peer rejection are essential. Research addressing affective experiences of peer-rejected children and the relationships between self-perception and treatment outcomes is needed.
