An animal model of partial hepatic artery occlusion and radiofrequency (RF)-induced hepatic hyperthermia was developed in the New Zealand white rabbit. Seventy-seven percent (10/13) of animals survived partial hepatic artery occlusion, 82% (41/50) survived RF-induced hepatic hyperthermia, and 66% (24/36) survived combined occlusion-hyperthermia. Mesenteric infarction secondary to inadvertent embolization of intestinal arteries was the principal cause of death in animals undergoing partial hepatic artery occlusion. Extrahepatic thermal toxicity appeared to be the major cause of death in animals subjected to hepatic hyperthermia or occlusion hyperthermia although some animals showed evidence of hepatic necrosis as well. Recent developments in our laboratory hold the promise that extrahepatic thermal toxicity can be eliminated by selectively focusing heat into the liver allowing exploration of the efficacy of occlusion-hyperthermia in controlling VX-2 tumors implanted in the rabbit liver.
Twenty-one low-risk outpatient asthmatics were challenged with 650 mg. of aspirin (ASA) and placebo in a double-blind manner. Methacholine dose response curves were performed after both aspirin and placebo administration. Baseline FEV1 was similar before aspirin and placebo challenges. No adverse clinical reactions were noted. No patient had a positive ASA challenge with a greater than 20% decrease in FEV1. Aspirin had no effect on bronchial reactivity that could be measured by a change in methacholine responsiveness.
A novel three-element radiofrequency hyperthermia system, consisting of paired multiple-feed inductors positioned between two large capacitor plates and a moveable grounding point, was designed and constructed. The spatial orientation of these elements and the phase of the current flowing through them can be varied to produce asymmetric magnetic field patterns resulting in development of asymmetric eddy current patterns orthogonal to the magnetic lines of force. These patterns could be further focused by manipulation of the capacitor plates and grounding point. Field and eddy current patterns were subsequently correlated with two-dimensional heating patterns at midplane depth in solid phantoms.

The clinical research information system (CRIS) at the San Francisco VA Medical Center was designed to provide information on use of services and treatment outcomes and to support the clinics for treatment of substance abuse. This system fills a niche often neglected by centralized hospital systems, which are usually designed to satisfy administrative demands for automated fiscal functions, but not designed to support patient care. Full integration with our central computing system remains a goal; for now, CRIS operates as a self-contained clinical system with several workstations linked by a telephone network.
