Age differences on alcoholic MMPI scales: a discriminant analysis approach.

Ninety-one male alcoholic inpatients were administered the MMPI after detoxification. Subjects were divided into four age groups. One-way analysis of variance was calculated on the 13 clinical scales and 15 experimental scales (A, R, ES, MT, LB, CA, DY, DO, RE, PR, ST, CN, AT, SO-R, AMAC). In addition, two discriminant analyses were calculated to evaluate whether the inclusion of the 15 experimental scales would increase the percent of correctly classified alcoholics according to age. Results indicated that the Psychopathic Deviant and Paranoia scales declined with increasing age. The Low Back Pain scale indicated a decline from the 50-65 group to the 20-29 group, while the Responsibility scale increased with age. Results from the two discriminant analyses suggested that inclusion of the 15 experimental scales improved the percentage of correctly classified alcoholics.

Project SCAN: counseling teen-age parents in a school setting.

A three-year interdisciplinary intervention program with adolescent parents and expectant parents was implemented within a public school system. The program combined educational and counseling efforts within a regular school to provide information, support, and the opportunity for personal growth. Program organization and implementation are discussed as well as implications for health professionals. There was evidence that the program was effective with respect to an important goal: keeping the students in school. For the three years of the project, significantly more program participants remained in school than control group members.

Young and old alcoholics: some personality differences.

Ninety-one alcoholic males aged 20-65 completed the MMPI. Their T scores on 10 clinical scales and 3 other indices were correlated with age. Seven of 13 correlations were statistically significant. There was a significant negative correlation between age and psychopathic deviance, paranoia, schizophrenia, and mania, and there was a significant positive correlation between age and hypochondriasis. Goldberg's indices showed that younger alcoholics' profiles resembled those of a sociopathic population as opposed to a psychiatric population and tended toward psychoticism rather than neuroticism. Results can assist practitioners in understanding and planning for a young clientele.
