Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, was a general practitioner, then studied ophthalmology. Doyle and Houdini, the famous magician, shared an interest in Spiritualism. They began as friends, but ended on opposite sides of a controversy over Spiritualism. Their differing viewpoints clashed with Besinnet, a well known medium, was involved.

A drug abuser developed simultaneous bilateral corneal ulcerations after the use of topical cocaine. One eye was enucleated because of secondary angle-closure glaucoma and the other developed a dense central corneal scar.

We reviewed the records of 37 patients who received orbital radiation for ocular changes of Graves' disease. Signs of orbital congestion improved in many patients. Proptosis extraocular muscle involvement, and corneal involvement were not appreciably altered. The best response was found in patients with optic nerve involvement. Radiation therapy is recommended as an initial therapeutic attack for the optic neuropathy of Graves' disease.
