A study was undertaken to assess the health, nutrition and psychosocial profile of Institutionalized children in four States--Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and West Bengal. A sample of 3,822 children from 70 institutions in 6-18 years age group formed the subjects of the study. It was observed that the destitute children were mainly taken care of in three types of institutions, viz, Voluntary, Government Aided and Government run institutions. Calorie deficiency and deficiency of Vitamins and minerals characterized the diets of these children. In general, there was no deficit of protein in their diets. Growth wise, these children were retarded both in height and weight compared to standards. However, they fared better in comparison to their age and sex counterparts in the rural and urban poor. Psychosocial profile of these children indicated that the prevailing environment in the institutions is less conducive for intellectual stimulation but not so for the development of skills of self-help, locomotion, socialization and imagery.
Endogamous populations belonging to Brahmin, Vysya, Mala, and Madiga castes of Andhra Pradesh, South India, were investigated for certain red cell enzyme and serum protein genetic markers. Frequency values were statistically analyzed to assess genetic variation among the populations. Average heterozygosity of ten loci and genetic diversity within and between the populations were calculated by using the methods of Nei. Nei's index was used to calculate genetic distances between the pairs of populations. A dendrogram was drawn adapting the modified unweighted pair group method suggested by Li, which agreed with the history of the populations.
Anthropometric data collected on 18,938 preschool children (1-5 years) by the National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau (NNMB) in 10 states of the country were analysed for assessing growth status in terms of 'stunting' and 'wasting'. The results showed that the prevalence of stunting, reflective of chronic malnutrition, is of higher magnitude compared to wasting (considered to be an outcome of current acute malnutrition), as well as wasting and stunting. The stunting increased with increasing age of children. The data also suggested that over the period, the prevalence of stunting declined from 58 per cent in 1974 to 45 per cent in 1980. A corresponding increase in normals from 35 to 50 per cent has also been noticed during the same period.

Eighty seven pregnant women belonging to poor socioeconomic groups of population were investigated to find out the effect of calcium supplementation during pregnancy on the bone density of the mother as well as of the neonate. Supplements of 300 and 600 mg of elemental calcium administered daily from the 20th week of gestation onward until term, brought about a significant increase in the bone density of the neonates born of such mothers compared to that of the neonates born to unsupplemented mothers. Although no significant difference was observed between the initial and final values for bone densities among the mothers, there was a tendency for an increase in the bone density of the mothers who received 600 mg of calcium supplements. Individual variation of different neonatal bones in their response to maternal calcium supplements was observed. Bone density of the neonate was not related to the birth weight, crown-heel, or crown-rump lengths.

Day-to-day fluctuations in the body weights on five consecutive days of 54 boys and 50 girls aged between 2 and 6 years were measured. The standard deviation of the body weights over this period were of the order of +/- 0-2 kg in boys and girls. On the basis of these findings, it is suggested that only loss or gain in body weights of more than twice this amount should be taken as indicative of real change.
The efficacy of arm circumference in identifying children suffering from different degrees of undernutrition was studied on 605 rural pre-school children, using standards for height, weight and arm circumference obtained on a group of well-to-do healthy children. The results indicated that there existed 57 per cent and 73 per cent agreement in the assessment using arm circumference on one hand, and weight and weight for height respectively on the other. Some children, who were severely undernourished on the basis of weight for age, weight for height and muscle circumference were classified as normal based on arm circumference.
