Observations concerning the staining properties of the macroconidia of certain dermatophyton species.

Staining of the macroconidia of several Dermatophyton species by lactophenol-cotton blue was investigated. Young macroconidia stain variably; their cytoplasm may appear homogeneous or inhomogeneous. The possible explanation seems to be variation in the composition of the cytoplasm. In some macroconidia dark-staining filament was seen along the longitudinal axis. Mature macroconidia showed basal or basal+apical homogeneous deep staining. The intensive apical staining suggests that the apical structure differs from the structure of the side wall.

The macroconidial septum of some dermatophyton species.

The septum of the macroconidium (MC) of dermatophytes was examined by light microscopy. Significant taxonomical differences between species have not been found. The septa seem to be three-layered, but only the middle layer can be considered a septum in the wall substance of two neighbouring chambers, impressed and completed by the septum. The septum verum originates from the middle layer of the three-layered MC wall or from its surface adjacent to the chamber wall. This type of septum is different from that described in Ascomycetes and other species. Light microscopic findings are insufficient to characterize the nature of the septal pore. The microscopic observation of the layers of the MC wall and of the septum may be disturbed by misleading optical phenomena.

Dermatophytes: conidium-ontogeny and classification.

The ontogeny of the conidia of representative Dermatophyte species has been examined by time-lapse microphotography. The results are summarized in five main conclusions. (i) the genera Microsporum, Trichophyton and Epidermophyton have holoblastic conidium-ontogeny; (ii) the investigated species exhibit polymeristematic development; (iii) delivery of the conidia occurs by means of a special detaching mechanism: consisting in autolysis of a detaching-cell or cells; (iv) the macroconidia have a primary septum; (v)chlamydospores including "gemmae" and "persistent-organs", strikingly similar to the macro- and microconidia as investigated in aqueous preparations, are also formed. The author classifies the dermatophytes into section III of the system of HUGHES and into the group III/C of TURBAKI's system.

Acremonium kiliense in oesophagus stenosis.

The aetiological significance of Acremonium kiliense is demonstrated for the first time in a human gastrointestinal infection. The mycotic oesophagitis with gastro-oesophageal reflux is described. The situation was treated effectively with itraconazole and anti-reflux surgery.
