[Treatment of eyelid burns and results].

Eyelid burns may cause irreversible damage to the eyelids and eye globe. We review 45 patients with eyelid burns, in 8 of whom skin grafting was required due to the deepness of the burn. The results were satisfactory in all except 1, in whom 9 surgical procedures were required to give complete coverage of the cornea. During 1 procedure skin was grafted directly onto the conjunctiva. The other 36 patients were treated conservatively.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans appearing during pregnancy.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is an uncommon skin tumor with a high potential for local recurrence if not adequately excised. There are only two reports in the literature describing dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans that enlarged considerably during pregnancy. On the other hand, the new development or enlargement of dermatofibromas in pregnancy is well documented. We present 2 additional patients in whom a dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans appeared and grew rapidly during pregnancy. Immunohistochemical studies were negative for estrogen and progesterone receptors. The possible pathophysiology and surgical management are presented and discussed.

A baby with a cervical "braid".

Among the anomalies and curiosities of nature, a braid-like cervical protrusion is a rare anatomical finding. Most similar reported cases of tail-like appendages have been observed in the sacrococcygeal or lumbar region. Herein we describe a newborn with a high cervical malformation located along the vertebral column, and its histological features. To our knowledge, this congenital anomaly has never been reported in the English literature.

Treatment of hemangiomas by sclerosing agents: an experimental and clinical study.

Twenty-one patients with hemangiomas on the face and lip who were treated with injections of sclerosing agents are discussed. The mode of action of these drugs was also studied experimentally on rats, which were injected through the pampiniform plexus of the spermatic cord. In the clinical study all patients showed satisfactory resolution of the hemangiomas with commensurate improvement in their appearance. The experimental study provides an explanation for the replacement of blood vessels by young connective tissue.

Testicular autotransplantation after traumatic castration.

Severe genitoperineal trauma with total avulsion of testicles in a 7-year-old boy resulted from a road accident. Soft tissues were reconstructed by local flaps and skin grafts. The only testicle that was found was reimplanted in his biceps muscle in an attempt to restore endocrine function. A human chorionic gonadotropin test showed no response, indicating that the transplanted tissue did not survive.

Collagen fiber alignment in the human preauricular dermis before and after rhytidectomy--a scanning electron microscopy study.

The microarchitecture of collagen fibers in preauricular dermis specimens that were obtained during two-phase rhytidectomy were visualized and recorded using the scanning electron microscope. Examination of photomicrographs revealed that both spatial arrangement and degree of convolution of the collagen fibers were completely different in the specimens of the two phases. The results are interpreted in terms of the viscoelastic properties of the skin.

Partial splenectomy in children with Gaucher's disease.

Because of hypersplenism and mechanical problems, partial splenectomy was performed in four children with Gaucher's disease. Subsequently, one of the patients underwent a total splenectomy due to bleeding from the remnant of the spleen. At the follow-up of the other three patients, an isotope scan showed that the remaining spleen was functioning well.

Partial splenectomy in Gaucher's disease.

An 11-year-old boy with Gaucher's disease is described. He had giant splenomegaly with severe signs of hypersplenism. A partial splenectomy was performed. On an isotope scan at follow-up, the remaining spleen was functioning well. Normal levels of IgM were recorded and there were no signs of hypersplenism.
