Homolanthionine in fungi: accumulation in the methionine-requiring mutants of Aspergillus nidulans.

Homolanthionine, a higher homologue of cystathionine, was found to accumulate in the mutants of Aspergillus nidulan impaired in the synthesis of methionine from homocysteine. The additional introduction of mutation resulting in a block at cystathionine gamma-synthase but not at cystathionine beta-synthase abolishes accumulation of both homolanthionine and cystathionine. This suggests a possible participation of cystathionine gamma-synthase in homolanthionine synthesis.

[Clinical aspects of Behcet's syndrome].

Behçet's syndrome is characterized by the recurrent ulceration of the genitals, aphthous lesions of the mouth, uveitis, or iridocyclitis followed by hypopyon. Morbidity is increasing in the regions of the Central and North Europe. The disease is endemic in the region of Mediterranean Sea and Japan. Clinical course of Behçet's syndrome in WHO classification in 4 patients in discussed. Aphthous stomatitis, ulceration of the genitals and iridocyclitis dominated in the symptomatology. Several laboratory tests including complement, immunoglobulins and HLA B-27 were carried out. No abnormal values were seen. A survey of literature on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and therapy is given.

[Ultrasonic scan of the thyroid gland during the treatment of endemic goiter with L-thyroxine].

Forty three adolescents of both sexes (26 female, 17 male) aged between 16 and 19 years with struma diffusa juvenilis were treated with L-thyroxine for 16 months. Size of the thyroid gland was classified according to WHO. The percentage of stages was the following; Ia-12%, Ib-69%, and II-19%. The patients were given L-thyroxine in a daily dose of 100 micrograms. Patients' compliance and the results of therapy were controlled every 4 months, measuring thyroid gland size with ultrasound scan and determining T3, T4 and TSH in serum. It was found that: 1. L-Thyroxine significantly reduces the volume of thyroid gland with insignificant changes in serum T3, T4, and TSH levels. 2. Ultrasound volumetry of the thyroid gland is a precise morphometric technique, reproducible with high degree of specificity. 3. Monotherapy with L-thyroxine given for at least one year is effective in endemic goitre. The authors discuss also literature on ultrasound volumetry of the thyroid gland and therapies in comparison with own results.

[Clinical, endocrinological, histological and chromosomal investigations on Klinefelter's syndrome].

In a clinical study 101 patients with Klinefelter's syndrome (Kl. sy.) are evaluated. Clinical, endocrinological and histometrical aspects were of main interest. The results were compared with a group of patients with azoospermia by obstruction. The statistical evaluation showed significant differences concerning body-height, volume of ejaculate, size of testis, and the concentration of FSH and LH in serum. Histometrical investigations showed significant differences for the diameter of seminiferous tubules and their wall-thickness. The various degrees of Leydig-cell-increase at Kl. Sy. are described as--increased--excessively increased--and adenomalike. Sex-Chromatin was found positive in 62 of 64 cases of Klinefelter's syndrome, verified by chromosome analysis. The number of Barr-bodies ranged from 1-45 (200 cells evaluated) x mean was 9,6. The analysis of chromosomes in 64 cases showed a karyotype of 47,XXY in 59 cases, a 46, XY/47,XXY mosaic in 4 cases and 46,XX/46,XY/47,XXY mosaic in 1 case. The discussion pointed out, that Kl. sy. has no typical, but a variety of symptoms. The position of the evaluation of sex-chromatin for diagnosis and the possibilities of errors are discussed. The problem of fertility in Kl. sy. is mentioned, as we found two cases with complete spermatogenesis, yet with azoospermia, among our patients. The pathogenesis of the characteristical histological changes in testis with Kl. sy. remains open. The mechanism which may lead to the striking increase of Leydig-cells is discussed.
