This article reviews the pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, adverse effects, drug interactions, and pedal and systemic indications of NSAIDs, oral hypoglycemics, and topical steroids. The integral involvement of these drugs in podiatric practice is also reviewed.
Laboratory testing for HIV infection presents a unique set of challenges for the podiatric physician. With increasing numbers of HIV-infected patients, the physician has the challenge of selecting, evaluating, and identifying the optimal testing methods for patients as well as for physicians. Because seroconversion can take weeks to occur, the need for specific tests such as antigen and culture becomes very important to both patients and physicians.
Extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma is an extremely rare neoplasm that may occur in the lower extremity. The neoplasm is highly aggressive and is usually fatal, however, early diagnosis and treatment greatly increase the chances of survival. A case report and review of the literature is presented.
The authors present a case study of a long standing plantar verruca undergoing malignant transformation to a squamous cell carcinoma. This case depicts the rapid change in a plantar verruca of some 20 years' duration without any prior symptomatology. Such malignant change, while rare, can occur and any change in the color, shape, size, or sudden onset of pain in a benign lesion should constitute the consideration of possible malignancy.
