Management of sports-related root fractures.

Fractures that occur midroot are most frequently missed in radiographs unless multiple exposures at different angles are used for diagnosis. Immediate treatment consists of reduction of the fracture with close apposition of segments and rigid splinting for 3 months. Because of the good potential for healing, root canal therapy is delayed until evidence of pulpal necrosis is confirmed. Healing is by hard tissue, connective tissue, bone, or a combination of these accompanied by obliteration of the root canal.

Traumatic injuries in the preschool child.

The dental management of traumatic injuries in the preschool child demands a careful and methodical approach to the clinical patient care. Insurance claims and litigation possibilities require detailed documentation of the accident, the nature and extent of the injury and all treatment rendered, follow-up care, and verbal instructions given to the parent. The prognosis of the treatment and the damage to the permanent teeth depend upon the nature and extent of the injury and, in part, upon the treatment rendered and the follow-up care received by the patient. The dental records must be retained until the permanent teeth erupt to fully assess the extent of the damage to the developing dentition.

Diagnosis and management of sports-related injuries to the teeth.

All dental emergencies must be considered true emergencies until determined otherwise. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of sports-related traumatic injuries to the teeth and supporting structures are essential to successful long-term clinical outcome. Emergency and long-term treatment techniques for crown fractures, tooth fractures, displaced teeth, and avulsed teeth are described from an endodontic perspective.

Overviews of pediatric-endodontics.

Pediatric-endodontics is an expanding part of pediatric dental practice. Emphasis is centered on the retention of primary teeth until the normal exfoliation time utilizing indirect pulp therapy, pulpotomy, pulpectomy and root canal fillings. The preservation of vitality in young permanent teeth via pulp capping and pulpotomy is paramount until root formation is completed. When pulpless, these young teeth may be salvaged by apexification procedures.

This article sets forth a framework within which the hospital training and education function can assess its current philosophy and subsequent actions. The choices that the function makes will determine whether its future orientation will be a dynamic or a static one.

How do you decide what education programs to attend?

Increasingly, constraints on resources require that any decision to participate in a continuing education program be scrutinized to ensure the most effective and efficient use of time, money, and personnel. In addition to these constraints, and complicating the decision-making process, are professional pressures to keep abreast of developments in the field. But deciding whether to attend a seminar or workshop can be facilitated if the program is evaluated according to the suggestions in this article.
