[A new training program--a status report: vasculitis].

Referring to the literature, it is known that structured standardized patient education represents an effective additional treatment in patients with chronic diseases. Programs are based on cognitive behavioral interventions. Within the last years an interdisciplinary approach for providing information on disease, therapies, side effects, coping strategies, nutrition and physiotherapy has been developed for patients with primary systemic vasculitides (PSV) in the vasculitis center Medical University of Luebeck/Bad Bramstedt. The contents of the seminars were revised and condensed into five modules. To evaluate the new program a documentation system consisting of patient and physician-administered questionnaires assessing socioeconomic, knowledge and disease-related outcome-parameters has been designed. Patients completed the questionnaires at baseline, 4 weeks, 6 and 12 months after training. First results show statistically significant improvement of knowledge and health-related quality of life.

[Scientifically based patient education exemplified by patients with primary systemic vasculitis. The vasculitis patient education program--development, contents and initial results of evaluation].

Referring to the literature, it is known that structured standardized patient education represents an effective additional treatment in patients with chronic diseases. Most programs are based on cognitive behavioral interventions. Within the last few years, an interdisciplinary approach for providing information on disease, therapies, side effects, coping strategies, nutrition and physiotherapy has been developed for patients with primary systemic vasculitides (PSV) in the vasculitis center of the Medical University of Lübeck/Bad Bramstedt. The contents of the seminars were revised and condensed into five modules. New slides and handouts for patients were developed. To evaluate the new form of the program, a documentation system consisting of patient and physician-administered questionnaires assessing socioeconomic, knowledge and disease-related outcome-parameters was designed. Patients are trained in closed groups (n = 10-15) and asked to complete questionnaires at baseline, 4 weeks and 6 months after training. First results show statistically significant improvement of knowledge and health-related quality of life.

[Freiburg Personality Inventory scores of patients with chronic polyarthritis in comparison with persons with arthrotic manifestations--no indication of a typical polyarthritis personality].

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis and arthrosis (33 females and 11 males in each group) were compared in terms of scores in the Freiburger Personality Inventory. After matching subjects of both groups for sex and age, t-tests for correlating samples were applied. No significant differences were found in any scale; in three of them significance was just missed (5% less than p less than 10%). Given the number of comparisons, this is not surprising; in addition, personality characteristics, as assessed by these scales, do not agree with descriptions of rheumatoid arthritis patients as given in the literature. Our results, hence, do not lend support to the assumption of a typical personality in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Elevated scores as found in other studies are most likely to reflect symptoms of joint ache rather than psychopathology.

[Value of physical therapy from the viewpoint of the patient. Results of a questionnaire].

Physiotherapy is well regarded by all patients with diseases of the locomotor system. In a questionnaire aimed at the self-evaluation of "non-proven remedies", we offered hospitalized patients of the Rheumaklinik Bad Bramstedt questions regarding classical forms of physiotherapy. Of 1600 questionnaires distributed, 447 (27.9%) could be counted and analysed. Categorized into four major groups of rheumatic diseases (rheumatoid arthritis/inflammatory diseases of joints, ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis and degenerative spine disease, including minor rheumatic complaints) we collected patients' opinions of different therapies. In addition, we set up a list of preferred therapies and a list of negative therapies, estimated as less helpful or even harmful, as well as a list of therapies which patients would like to try. The results confirm the value of classical methods of physiotherapy (exercises, pelotherapy, massage), which had a high degree of acceptance and effectiveness.

[Polyarthritis patients with and without detected rheumatoid factor: a comparison of the psychological personality].

The study examined again the question whether the presence of rheumatoid factor in rheumatoid arthritis (rh.A.) patients has a bearing on their personality scores. For this purpose 20 seropositive rh.A. patients were compared by means of the FPI-R (Freiburg Personality Inventory) with 20 rh.A. patients in whom the rheumatoid factor was absent. Groups were matched for sex and age; severity and duration of disease were taken into account as covariates. The covariates showed significant correlations with some personality variables. Diagnostic subgroups, however, did not differ in any of the FPI scales.
