The nursing care of AIDS patients: caring, not curing.

In sum, examination of the complex issues surrounding AIDS brings the disease into clearer focus for the individual health care professional. One of the benefits is that AIDS is causing the nursing profession to re-examine its role in health care. Absence of a cure is not tantamount to having nothing more to offer. In fact, care rather than cure, becomes imperative. The highest quality care possible for all patients irrespective of their background, colour, religion, sexual orientation, diagnosis and prognosis, is a priority. Hopefully everyone in health care and society at large will learn valuable lessons from the AIDS experience. In this context, the role of health care professionals should be that of student learning from the patient.

Working with the aged.

This article provides an identification and discussion of issues in working with old people. Attitudes toward the aged are examined and skills that may be appropriate for the helping professional to acquire in working with aged persons are suggested.

The relationship of locus of control, age, and sex to life satisfaction and death anxiety in older persons.

The present study examined Rotter's Internal-External (I-E) locus of control (LOC) concept in relation to life satisfaction and death anxiety in an aged population. Age and sex of the individual were also considered. In the case of life satisfaction, a strong sex and a strong locus of control effect were found. For death anxiety, again a strong sex effect was found, but there was also a significant interaction between locus of control and age. The article suggests the need for a life span developmental perspective in LOC research. Studies which explore the influence of life experiences, situational and environmental variables, and their effect on control orientation are also needed.
