Investigations on live vaccines against infectious bursal disease of chicks.

Four live virus vaccines against Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD) were studied with regard to their safety, immune response and applicability. None of the vaccines caused clinical symptoms or had an adverse impact on bodyweight. Differences between these vaccines were observed in their effect on the Bursa/Bodyweight Ratio and the severity of the microscopical lesions of the bursa Fabricii. The immunosuppressive effect of IBD vaccination at one day of age on the response to Newcastle disease vaccine applied was rather low. Three of the four vaccines induced antibodies associated with protection against challenge. Vaccination of SPF rearing chickens by drinking water at an age of 15 weeks produced an antibody response (Agar Gel Precipitin Test) whereas at 15 weeks produced an antibody response (Agar Gel Precipitin Test) whereas at an age of 23, 32 and 60 weeks it did not. Chickens of all age groups responded serologically to an intramuscular vaccination. A correlation was found between the immunological response and the effect of the vaccines on the bursa Fabricii.

Obstetrical-neonatal neurological relationship. A replication study.

A study concerning the relationship between neonatal neurological abnormality and 3 parameters of pre- and perinatal condition in a birth cohort of 1507 infants was replicated in a second cohort of 1655 infants. The 3 parameters chosen were preterm birth, intrauterine growth retardation and neonatal acidemia. The neurological examination in the second cohort was carried out by other examiners than in the first cohort. The incidence of neurological abnormality was again found to be raised in all 3 categories and again least in the acidemic subgroup. Also the finding could be confirmed that only in about half of the neurologically abnormal infants could the 3 parameters have exerted any effect at all, which implies the necessity of further analysis. This replication study shows that neurological examination in the newborn period is a reliable tool for the evaluation of the condition of infants with respect to their pre- and perinatal history.

[Studies on hepatitis vaccines in geese (author's transl)].

Three passages of goose hepatitis virus of muscoy duck embryo cell cultures were used as a vaccine in geese. The offspring of birds inoculated with the thirty-second of fifty-fifth passage were found to be immune to experimental infection with virulent goose hepatitis virus. The fifty-fifth passage, inoculated intramuscularly, did not result in transmission of the virus, neither through the hatching egg nor by direct contact. The eight-seventh passage was non-pathogenic for susceptible day-old goslings and produced active and adequate immunity in these young birds.

Feline mammary carcinomas as a model for human breast cancer. II. Comparison of in vivo and in vitro adriamycin sensitivity.

Feline mammary carcinomas were tested for their in vitro and in vivo sensitivity to Adriamycin. In vitro, twenty randomly chosen tumor islands were studied to test the effect of concentrations of the drug ranging from 0.25-2.00 micrograms/ml. In vivo, parts of primary tumors left in situ after surgical biopsy were used to assess the response to five i.v. injections of 30 mg/m2 Adriamycin. When comparing the in vitro and in vivo response, the best sensitivity (100%) was obtained using 2.00 micrograms/ml Adriamycin and the best specificity (75%) using 1.00 microgram/ml Adriamycin, both in vitro. Tumors recurring after treatment showed acquired resistance in vitro.
