Interaction between phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) stimulated human lymphocytes and two DNA viruses (adenovirus type 5 and herpes simplex virus type 1) considered to be closely connected with lymphoid tissues has been studied. The fate of the same viruses was investigated also in non-stimulated separated lymphocytes for comparative purposes. To elicit this interaction infectivity titrations, immunofluorescent technique and electron microscopy were used. The production of viral antigens was investigated by complement fixation. It has been shown that in PHA-stimulated lymphocytes from peripheral blood of healthy donors adenovirus type 5 is capable to replicate in its infectious form. Prolongation of the interval between stimulation and infection of cells significantly influenced the dynamics of replication. Non-stimulated lymphocytes produced antigens but no infectious particles.
The authors examined three groups of persons (hospitalized patients, outpatients, and school girls) and conclude that in the cases of polythelia the cardiac conduction disturbances occur considerably more frequently than in persons without polythelia. When polythelia and conduction disturbances occur frequently in a family, the coexistence of both disorders is most probably of hereditary origin.
Blast-cell transformation of lymphocytes in response to phytohaemagglutinin was examined in patients with urologic tumours and with nonmalignant urologic processes. A significant depression of immune reactivity was found in the malignant cases. The practical aspects of the findings are discussed.
Five hundred and thirty-six samples of honeycombs were examined in a laboratory in the years 1971-1974. In all the samples clinically determined as the foul brood, B. alvei was isolated as a pure culture, and enterococci, or both microorganisms were isolated in mixed form. Twenty-five strains of the isolated streptococci were analyzed microbiologically and biochemically; on the basis of their culture and biochemical characteristics five strains were designated as Streptococcus faecalis, 14 strains as Streptococcus faecalis var. liquefaciens, five strains as Streptococcus faecium and one strain as Streptococcus durans. After checking the used taxonomic key of the culture and biochemical classification of B. alvei it may be stated that the culture and biochemical characteristics are stable. The strains of B. alvei (very dried strains), which persisted in the dried slant meat-peptone agar, were viable under the laboratory conditions, which proves the high resistance of the spores to the environment.

The authors have been studying the bacterial diseases of the brood for a fairly long time. American and European foul brood has been studied with the highest attention. Cultures of Bacillus larvae (White, 1906) were examined both in freshly isolated strains and in collection strains of this micro-organism. In cases of foul brood, the pathological material was found to contain not only the typical rods of B. larvae but also immobile spiral forms which are usually referred to in literature as fragments or developmental forms of B. larvae. These spiral forms were found to constitute spindle-shaped formations in the culture of B. larvae; the multiplication of these spindles depends on the presence of the rods of B. larvae and their development and reproduction can be observed on wet gelatine agar in a Petri dish turned upside down under a normal microscope (10 X 10 magnification). In the combined liquid medium, used in the experiments, these formations disintegrate into immobile spirals; if re-cultivated on a solid medium they re-assume their spindle shape with transverse meridian arrangement (in different amounts). Staining for proving the presence of nucleic acids does not eliminate the possibility of these formations being separate micro-organisms which cannot be stained by current staining methods but can be represented by the contrast method according to Burri, or by silvering according to Klein. The authors succeeded to separate these micro-organisms, but without the rods of B. larvae the colonies of these formations are feeble.
A surgical case of coexisting renal cyst and tumour is reported, diagnosis having been made preoperatively with the aid of two recent diagnostic procedures. Electron microscopic study of the surgical specimen revealed virus-like intranuclear particles in the malignant tissue.

Isolated removal of the median eminence (ME) and pituitary stalk (PS) of female rats was performed under visual control, using a new instrument to open up the 3rd ventricle. Atrophy of the uterus, the follicles and the intersitial tissue in the ovaries was accompanied by persistent corpora lutea and persistent diestrous vaginal smears in rats which had undergone a successful removal of ME and PS. No change was, however, detected in the weight of the thyroid and adrenal glands at the end of the six weeks experimental period. An adenohypophysis implanted in the place of the ME at the time of the surgery, could not prevent these changes. In animals, in which the removal of the ME was not complete, the changes of the gonadal system were less pronounced. Immunocytology of the pituitary LH-, FSH, TSH- and prolactin-cells in animals with completely removed ME and PS showed inactive LH- and FSH-cells both in the grafted and in situ pituitaries, while the TSH- and prolactin-cells appeared to be in a stimulated state. In animals with ME remnant, LH-RH axon terminals were localized only on the blood vessels of the remnant. The part of the pituitary graft in contact with these blood vessels, as well as some areas of the in situ pituitary gland, contained active LH cells as judged from their size and immunohistological appearance. Since in the absence of the ME, the hypophysiotrophic area is not able to exert its regulatory effect on the gonadotrophs of the pituitary implant in this area, the authors suggest that this effect is mediated by the blood circulation of the ME which is rich in releasing hormones and is drained toward both the anterior pituitary and the medial basal hypothalamus.
We studied the long-term effect of civilization factors, DDT, high stocking rates, and post-incubation stress on the antibody response to the administration of Newcastle disease vaccine. The chickens were divided into three groups after hatching. The first group was fed a mixture with an addition of commercial DDT (100 mg per 1 kg of feed). The second group was given the same feed and, in addition, was kept at a high stocking rate. Half the experimental chickens of each group were tied in the third post-natal week, to subject the birds to another stress. Those in the control group remained intact. The results indicate that DDT administered with food increased the immunity response to the antigen stimulus. The additive stress from high stock densities reduced the immunity response, and decreased the response raised by DDT administration to the level of the control. The post-incubation stress was found to modify the long-term effect of DDT and high stocking rate upon the immunity response of the chickens.
The onset of FSH synthesis in the embryonic pituitary gland of the rat was studied by a peroxidase-labelled antibody method. The first FSH-containing cells appeared on the 20th day of embryonic life. From that day onwards, FSH cells increased rapidly in number. It was found that in adult animals some pituitary cells reacted with both anti-HCG and anti-FSH sera, indicating the simultaneous presence of LH and FSH in the same cell.
Endometrial epithelial cells and blood samples taken simultaneously with the curettage (first serum) of 138 patients suffering from menstrual bleeding disorders as well as materials obtained from 16 induced abortions, were studied for the presence of virus. Fourteen adenovirus 2 strains were isolated from samples of the patients. Endometrial epithelial cells of 35 patients were examined with immunofluorescence method and 23 of them displayed specific fluorescence referring to the presence of viral antigens, with adenovirus and herpesvirus antisera. Studying withserological reactions the first and second (convalescent) sera of patients, high titers were found against type 2 herpesvirus in both sera, and titer rise against the latent adenovirus types in the second sera. Neither infective virus nor the presence of viral antigens were demonstrable in materials obtained from induced abortions.
The usability of five nutrient media - three kinds of spirolate media, thioglycolate medium and brain hearth medium - suitable for the isolation of Vibrio coli and germs similar to borrelia isolated from pigs affected by dysentery, and vibria isolated from cattle, was compared in the study. The results of comparison show that fresh-prepared substrates must be used bor the isolation of the mentioned germs in all cases and a corresponding medium must be provided. The modified spirolate media prepared from inland and imported ingredients were suitable for the isolation of the mentioned microorganisms even in the case of their use as selective media after enrichment with antibiotics. The spirolate media and thioglycolator agar were not found suitable for maintaining the strains of germs similar to borrelia due to the quick production of involution forms and the result dying of the strains. Thenutrient solution prepared as the brain hearth inf. Oxoid blood agar is very suitable for the isolation as well as maintenance of strains.
