Laparoscopy in tuberculous peritonitis.

Intra-abdominal tuberculosis remains a significant health hazard in the developing countries. In countries where sophisticated medical facilities are not easily available, laparoscopic examination of intra-abdominal organs is helpful. In this study, 22 patients were found to have peritoneal tuberculosis out of 82 laparoscopic examinations. The major clinical presentation in these patients were abdominal pain, weight loss, fever and ascites. Tuberculin test was not always positive. Direct visualization of the peritoneum and obtaining peritoneal biopsies provide the definitive tissue diagnosis to confirm the clinical diagnosis.

Adult

Two cases of intestinal obstruction caused by tuberculosis--the role of frozen section diagnosis.

Upper intestinal obstruction caused by tuberculosis is relatively rare, and the diagnosis is often missed. Two cases are described that were diagnosed by frozen section during laparotomy. It might be thought that endoscopy would have eliminated these difficulties, but this is not in fact the case. Many laboratory safety codes forbid the use of frozen sections on tuberculous material, but in endemic areas this restriction is not practical. Special facilities are required so that all frozen sections can be handled safely.

Adult

Carcinoid syndrome without liver metastasis.

The carcinoid syndrome generally occurs due to metastasis of a carcinoid tumour in the liver. A patient is presented who had carcinoid syndrome due to abdominal disease without hepatic metastasis.

Adenocarcinoma

Clinical and radiological features of pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei is due to diffuse involvement of the peritoneal cavity with mucinous material. Four patients were found in two major general hospitals in Riyadh. All patients were male. Cardinal clinical features were abdominal distension, pain and weight loss. Computed tomography was helpful preoperatively. Laparoscopy or laparotomy were performed to arrive at a correct diagnosis.

Aged

Paraspinal abscess.
