The use of transvaginal ultrasound to aspirate bilateral hydrosalpinges prior to in vitro fertilization: a case report.

Transvaginal ultrasound has recently been introduced diagnostically for follicular monitoring, early pregnancy localization (1), pelvic structure identification, early fetal development (2), detection of ovarian enlargement in postmenopausal women (3), and detection of endometrial carcinoma (4). Transvaginal ultrasound has had a major impact on patient monitoring and treatment for in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF/ET). Therapeutically transvaginal ultrasound has been introduced for oocyte retrieval and selective pregnancy reduction. The purpose of this paper is to present the therapeutic use of transvaginal ultrasound to aspirate large bilateral hydrosalpinges which complicated embryo transfer during an in vitro fertilization cycle.

Mucinous cystic neoplasm of the pancreas demonstrated by ultrasound and endoscopic retrograde pancreatography.

Mucinous cystic neoplasms of the pancreas are rare lesions. They may undergo subclinical malignant transformation; hence, establishment of the diagnosis prior to surgical exploration is of great importance. The case herein reported is of interest because the use of endoscopic retrograde pancreatography and ultrasound strongly supported a clinical suspicion of a true cyst of the pancreas. It also represents the second case reported studied by these diagnostic modalities.

Ultrasound assisted amniocentesis in prenatal genetic counseling.

Pre-amniocentesis ultrasonic placental localization and fetal age determination have greatly facilitated genetic counseling by helping to reduce the morbidity of the procedure and by providing an accurate gestational age. The indications for amniocentesis, a technique to indicate the best site for the procedure, and results in 33 patients are discussed.
