Easily coupled whispering gallery plasmons in dielectric nanospheres embedded in gold films.

A new self-aligned robust method for coupling to whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of submicron microspheres utilizes their periodic arrangement without relying on nanopositioned external coupling devices. The microspheres are embedded in a nanostructured gold surface supporting delocalized plasmonic crystal modes that mediate the coupling, and can be tuned by the geometry. Detailed measurements of the angle- and orientation-dependent reflectivity reveal localized plasmonic WGMs whose energies scale with sphere diameter and agree closely with Mie calculations. Coupling between these plasmonic WGMs leads to mode splitting and the formation of plasmonic minibands of a controllable bandwidth.

Slow light and chromatic temporal dispersion in photonic crystal waveguides using femtosecond time of flight.

We report time-of-flight experiments on photonic-crystal waveguide structures using optical Kerr gating of a femtosecond white-light supercontinuum. These photonic-crystal structures, based on engineered silicon-nitride slab waveguides, possess broadband low-loss guiding properties, allowing the group velocity dispersion of optical pulses to be directly tracked as a function of wavelength. This dispersion is shown to be radically disrupted by the spectral band gaps associated with the photonic-crystal periodicity. Increased time-of-flight effects, or "slowed light," are clearly observed at the edges of band gaps in agreement with two-dimensional plane-wave theoretical models of group velocity dispersion. A universal model for slow light in such photonic crystals is proposed, which shows that slow light is controlled predominantly by the detuning from, and the size of, the photonic band gaps. Slowed light observed up to time delays of approximately 1 ps, corresponds to anomalous dispersion of approximately 3.5 ps/nm per mm of the photonic crystal structure. From the decreasing intensity of time-gated slow light as a function of time delay, we estimate the characteristic losses of modes which are guided in the spectral proximity of the photonic band gaps.

Plasmonic band gaps and trapped plasmons on nanostructured metal surfaces.

Nanostructured metal surfaces comprised of periodically arranged spherical voids are grown by electrochemical deposition through a self-assembled template. Detailed measurements of the angle- and orientation-dependent reflectivity reveal the spectral dispersion, from which we identify the presence of both delocalized Bragg and localized Mie plasmons. These couple strongly producing bonding and antibonding mixed plasmons with anomalous dispersion properties. Appropriate plasmon engineering of the void morphology selects the plasmon spatial and spectral positions, allowing these plasmonic crystal films to be optimized for a wide range of sensing applications.

Optical properties of mesoporous II-VI semiconductor compound films.

Direct liquid crystal templating from non-ionic polyoxyethylene surfactants has been utilised to produce well-defined birefringent films of nanostructured cadmium telluride films which displayed good optical properties as evidenced by UV/VIS reflectance spectroscopy.

Optical properties of nanostructured metal films.

Nanostructured metal films of platinum, gold and silver up to 675 nm thick we prepared by electrochemical deposition through templates of 700 nm diameter polystyrene spheres assembled as hexagonal close packed monolayer on an evaporated gold surface followed by removal of the template by dissolution in tetrahydrofuran. The reflection spectra of the films at normal incidence were recorded as a function of film thickness and the spectra correlated with the local visual appearance of the film and the surface structure from SEM. For thin films, below one quarter sphere height, the spectra show a single reflectivity dip at a wavelength just below the sphere diameter consistent with surface-plasmon grating-like behaviour. For the thicker films several reflectivity dips are observed which move towards longer wavelength with increasing film thickness. This behaviour is shown to be consistent with a model in which light reflected from the top of the structure interferes with light reflected from within the spherical segment cavities in the film.

Coherent spectroscopy of optically gated charged single InGaAs quantum dots.

The excited states of neutral and charged single InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots are studied using a confocal microspectroscopy technique. Because of their different Coulomb energy shifts, the charged and neutral states of the same quantum dot can be selectively excited. The charge of the quantum dot is controlled by a photo-depletion mechanism. Time-resolved coherent spectroscopy shows that the dephasing time of the excited states is longer when the quantum dot is charged. Rabi oscillation of the excited state of a singly charged quantum dot is demonstrated.

Electron-polariton scattering in semiconductor microcavities.

In semiconductor microcavities, electron-polariton scattering has been proposed as an efficient process that can drive polaritons from the bottleneck region to the ground state, achieving Bose amplification of the optical emission. We present clear experimental observation of this process in a structure that allows control of the electron density and we report substantial enhancement of photoluminescence. We show that this enhancement is more effective at higher temperatures due to the different way that electron scattering processes either broaden or relax polaritons.

Confined plasmons in metallic nanocavities.

We investigate the properties of gold surfaces patterned using a nanoscale "lost wax" technique by electrochemical deposition through a self-assembled latex template. Near-spherical gold nanocavities within the resulting porous films support localized surface plasmons which couple strongly to incident light, appearing as sharp spectral features in reflectivity measurements. The energy of the resonances is easily tunable from ultraviolet to near infrared by controlling the diameter and height of the nanocavities. The energies of these features agree well with the Mie resonances of a perfect spherical void.

Gateable suppression of spin relaxation in semiconductors.

The decay of spin memory in a 2D electron gas is found to be suppressed close to the metal-insulator transition. By dynamically probing the device using ultrafast spectroscopy, relaxation of optically excited electron spin is directly measured as a function of the carrier density. Motional narrowing favors spin preservation in the maximally scattered but nonlocalized electronic states. This implies that the spin-relaxation rate can be both tuned in situ and specifically engineered in appropriate device geometries.

Optical trirefringence in photonic crystal waveguides.

We demonstrate that 2D photonic crystals can possess optical trirefringence in which there are six field orientations for which linear incident light is not perturbed on reflection or transmission. Such a property is rigorously forbidden in homogeneous nonmagnetic dielectrics which can possess only optical birefringence. We experimentally demonstrate this phenomena in silicon-based mesostructures formed from photonic crystal waveguides embedded in a Fabry-Perot cavity. Multirefringence is controlled by the presence of submicron dielectric patterning and is well explained by an exact scattering matrix theory.
