HEMOGLOBIN SOLUBILITY AND ALPHA-CHAIN STRUCTURE IN CROSSES BETWEEN TWO INBREAD MOUSE STRAINS.

In genetic crosses between mouse strains with low and high solubilities of hemoglobin, solubility segregated as a Mendelian unit and appeared to be determined by the alleles controlling alpha-chain structure. New data eliminate close linkage between the alpha-chain locus and genetic markers in linkage groups Ill, IV, XI, XIII, and XVI. Simplified methods are presented for screening differences inalpha-chain peptides and solubility.

Properties of a bacteriophage derived from Escherichia coli K235.

A temperate bacteriophage was isolated from the colicinogenic strain of Escherichia coli K235 and characterized. This phage, termed PK, is related to P2 virus morphologically, serologically, and, possibly, genetically and it bears no relationship to the T-even phages. It was also demonstrated that PK virus and colicine K differ both in their host range and in their immunological specificity, and that PK prophage does not induce the colicinogenesis in its host bacterium. It was concluded that the formation of colicine K. and PK phage in E. coli K235 are controlled by different genetic determinants.

The isolation of colicine V and a study of its immunological properties.

Colicine V has been obtained from the culture medium in which the colicinogenic bacillus E. coli K357 L_T is grown. The material is electrophoretically homogeneous and proves to be a lipocarbohydrate protein complex identical with the type-specific O antigen of the parent bacillus. Colicine V is toxic both for mice and for rabbits and readily stimulates the elaboration of precipitins and bacterial agglutinins, as well as antibodies which neutralize the antibacterial activity of the colicine itself. The colicine is also toxic for certain strains of Enterobacteriaceae. Although colicine V and colicine K, previously described in this laboratory, have many properties in common, they exhibit no cross-serological relationship whatsoever.
