The rheological properties of Advantage-S and Replens were measured at body (37 degrees C) and room temperature (25 degrees C) over a range of physiologically relevant shear rates. The viscosity of Replens was found to differ from that of Advantage-S, particularly at room temperature. In addition, the two materials differed in their miscibility with a vaginal fluid simulant.
A female new-born with bilateral lateral facial clefts, resulting in macrostomia, is reported. In addition she had a diminished palpebral fissure length. She died suddenly at the age of 6 months, presumably due to respiratory insufficiency. The unique combination of facial anomalies, present in this patient, has not been reported before. We discuss the differential diagnosis and the classification of facial clefts.
The rheological properties of 4 commercially available contraceptive drug delivery gels and their dilutions with a vaginal fluid simulant were measured. These properties govern the critical functions of spreading and retention of these gels over the vaginal surfaces. Measurements made on Conceptrol, KY Plus, Gynol II, and Advantage-S included stress growth, stress relaxation and residual stress, and the shear rate dependence of viscosity. All gels exhibited non-Newtonian behavior including shear thinning and viscoelasticity. Conceptrol and Gynol II had no residual stress, while both KY Plus and Advantage-S did. The gels differed in their response to dilution with vaginal fluid simulant.

We sought to determine the effect of balloon material, balloon length, and inflation sequence on the straightening forces generated during percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) in angulated segments. Using an in vitro model consisting of a curved channel (3/4" radius) with a displaceable pressure sensor, we examined four different balloon materials: compliant (POC), semicompliant (PE600 and Duralyn), and noncompliant (PET), two balloon lengths (20 mm and 40 mm), and two inflation sequences (rapid and slow) with continuous recording of straightening force during each balloon inflation. Three balloons were tested for each combination of materials, length, and inflation sequence. Long balloons exerted significantly lower straightening forces. There were significantly higher straightening forces with noncompliant, particularly short, balloons. Varying the inflation sequence had no significant effect. For PTCA in angulated segments: (1) long balloons produce lower straightening force, (2) noncompliant balloons produce higher straightening force, particularly with short balloons, and (3) varying the inflation sequence has no significant effect on straightening force.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the feasibility of replacing a ureteral segment with a neointimized Gore-Tex graft. METHODS: Seven adult mongrel dogs underwent a two-stage operative procedure. The first procedure involved arterializing the graft to stimulate spread of a luminal neoendothelium by transmural capillary growth. Eight weeks after the initial procedure, a segment of the ipsilateral ureter was replaced with a segment of the neointimized graft. RESULTS: Histologic evaluation of a portion of the graft removed during the second procedure demonstrated transmural neocapillary ingrowth in all grafts; however, there was no neoendothelial growth on the luminal surface. In 5 dogs the graft was occluded with blood clot and was not suitable for a ureteral prosthesis. In 2 dogs the graft was patent and was successfully incorporated into the urinary system. After 1 year of observation, both of these dogs maintained a patent ureter and had no evidence of hydronephrosis on intravenous urogram. CONCLUSIONS: These data demonstrate that a Gore-Tex graft can be used as a ureteral prosthesis in the dog. The importance of preliminary arterialization, however, remains to be determined.
Prostatitis is a common clinical syndrome that on rare occasions may result from mass lesions in the pelvis. This report concerns a man with debilitating prostatitis that was caused by a müllerian duct cyst. The diagnosis was facilitated by examination with magnetic resonance imaging using a pelvic phased array surface coil and a small field of view.
We report on 2 girls with mosaic tetrasomy 8p. Patient 1 showed the extra iso 8p chromosome in 20% of cultured lymphocytes and 18% of cultured fibroblasts [46,XX/47,XX,+i(8p)]. She presented with growth retardation, mild facial alterations, and motor developmental delay. Patient 2 presented with developmental delay, hypotonia, and slight facial alterations; she had the extra iso 8p chromosome in 94% of cultured peripheral lymphocytes. The patients are compared to the 6 previously reported cases. In our experience, the presently reported patients clinically resemble children with inv dup(8)(p21-p22) and patients with mosaic trisomy 8.

Psychiatrists and others have too often discounted reports of sexual attacks upon children and ascribed the incident to fantasy. The author's experience in private psychoanalytic practice and in Philadelphia's rape victim clinics indicates that these assaults occur frequently. If the sexual attack is dealt with improperly or repressed it may cause serious psychologic problems for the victim as an adult.
