Characterization and quantification of the hydrocarbons fraction of the subcutaneous fresh fat of Iberian pig by off-line combination of high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography.

Hydrocarbons in fresh subcutaneous fat of Iberian pig have been analyzed by GC-MS after fractionation of the unsaponifiable fraction with a new off-line combination of HPLC and GC method. The new method proposed improves the recovery and simultaneous quantification of terpenic hydrocarbons in comparison to the traditional LC method. When necessary and for identification purposes, selective ion monitoring (SIM) was used as acquisition mode in GC-MS. To determine the position of the double bonds in the unsaturated hydrocarbon chain the dimethyl disulfide derivatives (DMDS) were obtained. To elucidate the structure of the branched 1-alkenes the hydrocarbon fraction was submitted to hydrogenation. Thirty-five compounds have been identified, including n-alkanes, n-alkenes, branched (n-1,n-2-dimethyl-1-alkenes) and terpenic hydrocarbons, being the most abundant n-alkenes and n-alkanes of even chain of n-C12-n-C26. Besides the hydrocarbons already described in bibliography, a new diterpenic hydrocarbon, ent-kaurene, have been identified for the first time. The compound reported as Neophytadiene by other authors, has been identified as a 20 atoms hydrocarbon with two double bonds, the 7,11,15-trimethyl-heptadeca-1,4-diene.

Extensive and deep dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigitalis in an HIV-1 positive patient.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous infections are common in HIV-1 positive patients and are usually severe, recurrent, and caused by microorganisms that are unusual in immunocompetent patients. OBJECTIVE: We report a case of an HIV-1-positive 23-year-old male, with a history of intravenous drug use, in stage C-II (CDC '86), with a CD4 lymphocyte count of 335 cells/mm3. He had multiple, large erythematous, circinate and pustular plaques on his abdomen, back, arms and legs. RESULTS: We isolated Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigitalis from the lesions. The biopsy showed suppurative deep dermatophytosis and folliculitis. The patient satisfactorily responded to itraconazole (100 mg/d for 14 days). CONCLUSION: This is the first reported case of deep dermatophytosis caused by T. mentagrophytes in an HIV-positive patient.

Phenolic compounds in Spanish olive oils.

Phenolic compounds in Spanish virgin olive oils were characterized by HPLC. Simple phenols such as hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, vanillic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, and vanillin were found in most of the oils. The flavonoids apigenin and luteolin were also found in most of the oils. The dialdehydic form of elenolic acid linked to tyrosol and hydroxytyrosol was also detected, as were oleuropein and ligstroside aglycons. The structure of a new compound was elucidated by MS and NMR as being that of 4-(acetoxyethyl)-1,2-dihydroxybenzene. Changes of phenolic compounds in virgin olive oils with maturation of fruits were also studied. Hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, and luteolin increased their concentration in oils with maturation of fruits. On the contrary, glucoside aglycons diminished their concentration with maturation. No clear tendency was observed for the rest of the phenolic compounds identified.

Determination of phospholipid fatty acid and triacylglycerol composition of rat caecal mucosa.

The lipid composition of rat caecal mucosa, including the fatty acid composition of phospholipids and triacylglycerols, has been examined by capillary gas chromatography. Thirty-seven peaks were resolved, ranging in chain length from 12 to 24 carbon atoms. Preliminary identification of fatty acids by comparison with authentic standards was confirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry using electron-impact ionization. The neutral and polar components were examined. Fatty acid methyl esters were quantified in absolute amounts with respect to the percentage of total phospholipid and triacylglycerols. The results show significantly higher levels of 16:0, 18:0, 18:1(n-9), 18:1(n-7), 18:2(n-6) and 20:4(n-6) in phospholipids, and higher levels of 16:0, 18:1(n-9) and 18:2(n-6) in triacylglycerols. On the other hand, analysis of caecal triacylglycerols revealed sn-glycerol-palmitate-oleate-palmitate, sn-glycerol-palmitate-linoleate-palmitate and sn-glycerol-palmitate-linoleate-oleate as major components.

Cutaneous ganglion cell choristoma. Report of a case.

We describe the histological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural findings of a cutaneous tumour composed of ganglion cells, without any other proliferating component. As ganglion cells are not normal components of the skin, we propose the term "ganglion cell choristoma" for this lesion. The differential diagnosis of related lesions such as cutaneous ganglioneuroma, well-differentiated metastases from neuroblastoma, autonomic ganglia entrapped by neurofibroma, and reactive processes, and the possible histogenesis of ganglion cell choristoma are discussed.
