[Soft intubation of the lacrimal ducts].

Authors describe their own modification of intubation of lacrimal system, which they developed on the island of Malta. They used usual instruments for probing with addition of venous catheter and silicone rod. This technique was used on 40 patients in three diagnostic groups. The best results were achieved in congenital obstructions in children and traumatic lacerations of lacrimal system, where 100% success was achieved. The success rate in adult patients with acquired obstructions was about 60%. The complications rate was very low. Advantage of this modification is low costs, easy availability of instruments and gentleness towards nasal mucosa.

Adolescent

[The narrow pupil and a manual technic of extracapsular cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation].

Sufficient mydriasis is essential for the success of ECCE implantation. Author describes the technique along with the results of ECCE performed on 42 eyes with rigidly narrow pupils, which hasn't reacted to mydriatics. In these patients he performed iridectomy followed by iridoplasty. In part of the group he used his own technique based on McCannell suture. With this simple method he achieved very good results and recommends its use.

Cataract Extraction

[Capsulorhexis with a manual extracapsular extraction technic-- initial experience].

Capsulorhexis is a modern way of opening of the anterior capsule. The author describes the technique of capsulorhexis, he used on 52 eyes. When capsulorhexis is performed in ECCE, delivery of lens nucleus is more difficult. The author used either "Keyhole" modification or hydroexpression described by Thiem, Corydon with combination of reduction of the nucleus described by Nishi. He achieved very good results but does not recommend this method for the inexperienced extracapsular surgeons.

Anterior Eye Segment

[Color vision in pseudophakia].

The authors compare colour differentiation of 30 phakic and 30 pseudophakic eyes, using the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue test. No significant difference was found between the two groups as regards differentiation of colours although theoretically it could be expected that colour differentiation will be better in eyes with a synthetic intraocular lens. The factor which has the greatest influence on colour sense is the subject's age.

Adult

[Modern methods of cataract extraction].

The authors describe their own manual technique of extracapsular cataract extraction with subsequent implantation of a synthetic intraocular lens. They give an account of results assembled in 83 patients after ECE, incl. 60 where an intraocular lens was implanted. They achieved very satisfactory results with a minimal number of complications, one of which was more serious. In the conclusion the authors emphasize that final evaluation calls for a longer follow-up period.

Adult

[Experience gained from working in Malta].

The author describes the working conditions of an ophthalmologist in the Maltese Republic. He deals with the general situation in this small country as well as with the organization and standard of the health services. He describes treatment of eye diseases under local conditions in Malta.

Humans

[Binocular vision after intraocular lens implantation].

The authors investigated the binocular function in a group of 127 patients after operation of cataract to whom an artificial intraocular lens was implanted. From the results ensues that adequate, or at least binocular vision satisfactory for human life, was restored in 82.74% members of the investigated group.

Adult

[Methods and results of intraocular lens implantation at the Eye Clinic in Brno].

The authors describe the technique of operation and the achieved results in a group of 148 patients to whom an intraocular lens was implanted. They achieved with a minimal number of complications in 96.3% practically normal vision. The author considers extracapsular extractions and implantation of lenses into the posterior chamber the future of the surgical approach to cataract in this country.

Adult

[Complications of intraocular lens implantation].

The authors analyze the causes of per- and postoperative complications of implantations of intraocular retropupillary lenses. In a group of 132 extracapsular extractions of cataract with implantation of an intraocular lens no marked decentering was found. The most frequent postoperative complication were transitory striae and fibrin exudates in the pupil. Only once the "toxic lens syndrome" was encountered. The fine cilia of the posterior capsule, pigment dispersion and changes in the width of the pupil did not affect markedly the visual functions of the organ. The authors did not observe regenerating cataracts, or fibroses of the posterior capsule (mainly because of the short follow up period).

Adult

[Monitoring and therapy of patients with diabetic retinopathy at the Eye Clinic in Brno].

Authors refer the control and therapy of patients with diabetic retinopathy followed on the Brno Eye Clinic. The laser therapy was on the first place and was successfully used in 160 patients. Conservative therapy using some drugs is considered as an auxiliary one. Vitrectomies were not performed for the lack of the needed instrumental equipment.

Diabetic Retinopathy

[Personal experience with modern extracapsular cataract extraction].

In the group of 42 eyes with extracapsular cataract extraction the postoperative results were very favourable differing conditions. There did not occur any more serious postoperative complications. Authors verified that for a skillful ophthalmic surgeon this operation is easily performed, on the other hand many of them have to overcome some accustomed aversion and to use at present time the needed extracapsular extraction, in spite of the previous routinely used intracapsular technique, which was successfully performed for many years. Present trend of extracapsular cataract extractions is based on the aim to decrease the number of the postoperative complications and to make possible the implantation of the intraocular lenses into the posterior chamber of the eye.

Adult

[Prognosis in patients with intraocular malignant melanoma].

Based on previous work from the same department the authors analyzed risk factors in patients after enucleation of the eye with an intraocular melanoblastoma of the tunica vasculosa. Similarly as the majority of other authors, they found that the most important factors were the cellular type of the tumour, the size of the base, the site, and age of the patient.

Eye Enucleation

Nucleolar ultrastructure in psoriatic skin lesions.

Keratinocytes in psoriatic skin lesions were studied to provide more information on the nucleolar ultrastructure in these cells. In contrast to normal keratinocytes, nucleoli in the keratinocytes of the uppermost layer of stratum granulosum (intermedium) of psoriatic lesions were characterized by the absence of the segregation of nucleolar components. In addition, the keratinocytes without keratohyalin of the uppermost layer of stratum intermedium of psoriatic lesions did not contain degranulated nucleoli. Such observations indicate an alteration of the maturation processes in the keratinocytes of the psoriatic skin lesions and the characteristic nucleolar changes apparently represent the morphological expression of the altered inhibition of the nucleolar (preribosomal) RNA synthesis.
