First experience with ELISA serosurvey for tick-borne borreliosis (Lyme disease) in Czechoslovakia.

Antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi were searched for in the sera from two groups of hospital patients and one group of healthy agricultural workers. The antibody response was measured by the authors' own modification of the ELISA method employing the antigen prepared from Borrelia recurrentis strain propagated in laboratory mice. Positive antibody titres to Borrelia were demonstrated in 5 out of the 44 patients admitted to the Infectious Diseases Clinic, in 8 out of the 32 patients from the Neurologic Clinic and in 16 out of the 52 healthy agricultural workers living in areas infested with ticks. These findings are interpreted as showing the topicality of the Lyme disease problem in Czechoslovakia.

A case of human cryptosporidiosis in Czechoslovakia.

A case of human cryptosporidiosis, the first one reported in Czechoslovakia, is described. The disease was diagnosed by the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts in the feces. The methods used independently to identify oocysts were the fecal flotation technique employing a saturated solution of sucrose and the microscopic examination of stained fecal smears. The patient was a 4-year-old boy with watery diarrhea of 5 days' duration who was kept on a diet and treated with a suspension of Endiaron N Spofa. Excretion positivity for Cryptosporidium oocysts in the feces was detectable at 3 and 5 days after appearance of first clinical manifestations. Bacteriological examination was repeatedly negative. This finding leaves little doubt as to existence of human cryptosporidiosis in Czechoslovakia, but what remains obscure is its overall contribution to the etiology of diarrheal diseases encountered in the population.

[Differential diagnosis of adnexal tumors using computer tomography].

A correct differential diagnosis of pelvic tumors is sophisticated in gynecology. The present effort concerns with introducing of computertomography in our diagnostic facilities. The ultrasound method being of value in detection of early developing ovarian tumors and showing their size as well as the extent of tissue transformation is however unprecise in comparison with CT-method which allows to evaluate the anatomical relations and tissue differences. The latter one allows differentiation of cystic tumor from dermoid cyst as well as from solid tumor. Density measurement scrutinizes with more precision endometriosis, lipomatosis and tubo-ovarial abscesses. The CT-diagnosis has been proving useful especially in differentiation between ovarian and intestinal tumors.
