Cilia identifiable by light microscopy occur extremely rarely in malignant tumor cells. This report documents the presence of cilia on exfoliated malignant tumor cells shed from an ovarian adenocarcinoma. Cilia-bearing tumor cells were observed in abdominal and pleural fluids. These cilia occurred at atypical locations. They were observed as unipolar, bipolar, lateral, and pericellular structures. Diagnostic features and implications of cilia in relation to malignant cells are discussed.

A hitherto undescribed occurrence of actinomycetes in cervico-vaginal smears of IUD users is reported. The morphology of actinomycetes in Papanicolaou stained smears is described. The differential diagnosis and the significance of these observations is discussed.
Pleural and pericardial fluid specimens have been studied in seven patients with diagnosis of viral infection. Intranuclear inclusions, multinucleated giant cells with gelatinous nuclear changes and atypical mesothelial cells were observed. These observations suggest that viral involvement of the mesothelium produces cellular changes which can be detected cytologically in routine Papanicolaou-stained body cavity fluid specimens.
Sputum cytology in patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis has been investigated. All cases of pulmonary sarcoidosis with roentgenographic evidence of pulmonary interstitial fibrosis and scarring have revealed diagnostically significant cytologic features in their pulmonary material. These include multinucleated epitheloid giant cells, epithelioid cells and lymphoid mononuclear cells in an otherwise noninflammatory, clean specimen. The characteristic cells occur in streaks, either singly or as syncytium. They are dark, cyanophilic with little phagocytic activity. Schaumann and asteroid bodies may be present. Cytologic examination of induced sputum specimens in asymptomatic patients of suspected pulmonary sarcoidosis with interstitial involvement can help in diagnosis and management of these cases.
