Integrating research and grant writing in an undergraduate dietetics program.

The Council on Research of The American Dietetic Association considers research by dietitians a necessity. A number of authors conclude that the link between research and practice needs to begin with the educational experience. We report on a model for integrating research and grant proposal writing in the undergraduate dietetics curriculum that has been used successfully for 6 years in a coordinated program. Students carry out research projects so that they learn teamwork, read research articles more critically, become more skilled with statistical analysis, and learn how to seek funding for their work. This model could easily be adopted by educational programs. Having such research and writing experience as students may stimulate continued research in the practice setting.

Results of continuous ambulatory electrocardiography in a cat with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

An 8-year-old neutered male cat with a history of intermittent collapse and dyspnea was evaluated. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy was diagnosed on the basis of findings from physical examination, radiography, and echocardiography. Cardiac arrhythmias were not recorded during routine electrocardiography. Continuous ambulatory electrocardiography documented severe ventricular arrhythmias (ventricular premature complexes, ventricular bigeminy, and paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia). Continuous ambulatory electrocardiography can detect intermittent and potentially life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias.

Animals

Septic shock.

Septic shock is a life-threatening condition that results from the combined effects of bacteria and the host's chemical mediators of inflammation. Of particular detriment is the hyperdynamic and hypodynamic vasomotor instability that severely compromises the patient prior to the onset of overt bacteremia. The principles of therapy include (1) a prompt diagnosis, (2) removing the source of sepsis, (3) maintaining normal blood pressure through the use of parenteral fluids and inotropes, (4) selecting the appropriate antimicrobial agent, and (5) stringent patient monitoring. Sometimes, despite the optimal use of diagnostic tests and high-quality treatment, the prognosis remains guarded to grave.
