Involvement in the legislative process through the state association.

Speech-language-hearing professionals need to develop a proactive posture regarding legislative issues. The first steps must begin at the local level. The state association is a reasonable and logical organization from which broader issues may be addressed, issues affecting the professionals as well as the patients/clients/students who require their services. The ideas that we generate at conferences and meetings to improve our educational and health care systems can be funneled into meaningful legislative action. The legislative issues of today become the governing regulations of tomorrow. Involvement in the legislative process helps strengthen our collective voices.

Augmentative communication--an approach for the severely physically handicapped person without oral speech.

Many individuals are unable to communicate, due to severe neuromuscular impairments. In the past they were assessed by the speech pathologist for their ability to produce oral speech. When the oral musculature and respiratory system were found to be too weak to support sustained phonation for speech, they did not receive further treatment. This severe dysarthria resulted in unintelligible or no useful speech. Both children and adults experienced the extreme frustration of no human communication despite, in many cases, their intact intellectual functioning. Augmentative communication offers supplementary systems for these individuals to express their thoughts and resume or begin some measure of a productive life. This article describes the potential of speechless individuals, the assessment process, some of the existing technology and the role of health care professionals in this new field.

Wellness: the mode in the new paradigm.

A fundamental paradigm shift is occurring in the health care field that gives new hope to the challenge of reducing health care costs through the promotion of wellness. The authors of this paper present the present components of the new paradigm, the historical aspects of the paradigm shift, and examples of the paradigm shift in community health. The authors have also attempted to suggest ways in which individuals and communities can participate in the new paradigm.
