A patient classification system for ambulatory care.

Patient classification systems (PCSs) for ambulatory care are difficult to develop because there are so few similarities among groups of patients and/or diagnoses in relation to the required nursing activities. In addition, the nursing activities required for specific patients and/or diagnoses also are dissimilar in relation to nursing time required. Therefore, a PCS was developed to assess staffing needs. This outpatient classification system reflects actual nursing time spent with each patient.

Binding specificities of wild-type and cloned Escherichia coli strains that recognize globo-A.

In this study we compared the specificity for the globoseries of glycolipids of Escherichia coli expressing the O-negative, A-positive (ONAP) adhesin and clones transformed with the pap-like (prs or pap-2) gene cluster. Receptor-active glycolipids were identified by the ability of radiolabeled bacteria to bind to the glycolipids on thin-layer chromatogram plates. The ONAP adhesin and pap-like clones bound with high affinity to the globo-A and Forssman glycolipids. The ONAP strains did not recognize other glycolipids of the globoseries. In contrast, the pap-like clones also showed weak binding to globotriaosylceramide and reacted weakly with Gal alpha 1----4 Gal beta-latex beads. We suggest that the pap-like and ONAP adhesins recognize an epitope shared by the globo-A and Forssman structures, e.g., terminal GalNAc alpha 1----3 bound to Gal alpha 1----4Gal beta-containing glycolipids.

Rehabilitation techniques for athletic injury.

In summary, the application of principles of rehabilitation to athletic injury includes efforts directed at reducing swelling and pain while maintaining the range of motion. As the range of motion increases, efforts are made to regain strength while the patient is protected from reinjury and from the stresses of returning to function.

Serum prostatic antigen measurement in localized prostatic cancer: correlation with clinical course.

Serial serum prostatic antigen measurements were performed on patients treated for localized prostatic carcinoma. There was good correlation of mean serum prostatic antigen levels and the surgical stage of the disease. Among patients treated by radical prostatectomy there was good correlation of an elevated serum prostatic antigen and the development of metastatic disease. It appears that serum prostatic antigen is a good indicator and predictor of the development of distant metastasis in this group of patients.

"The branches into which bacteriology is now ramifying" revisited.

The American Society for Microbiology was originally founded in 1899 as the Society of American Bacteriologists. The transition from "bacteriology" to "microbiology" and from an emphasis on the identity of the membership (bacteriologists) to an emphasis on the discipline (microbiology) was a contentious one that occurred in several steps. This article reviews the history and events that accompanied this development.
