The families of 12 carefully diagnosed patients with borderline personality disorder are compared with the families of both paranoid schizophrenic patients and patients with neurotic personality disorders. The families of the borderline patients were distinguished by the rigid tightness of the marital bond to the exclusion of the attention, support, or protection of the children. This pattern of neglect conforms to one theme in the clinical literature, and its implications for understanding and treating borderline patients are discussed. Limitations in the research methodology make the conclusions from this study tentative, but the results suggest new areas in need of research attention.

Generalised post-operative cerebral vasospasm is a major factor in delineating poor operative results following direct ruptured intracranial aneurysms. Continuous monitoring of intracranial pressure seems to be particularly helpful on such occasions, and intracranial compliance determination as well. High intracranial compliance values suggest that even small intracranial volume increases may induce rapid intracranial pressure and situations likely to produce neurological deterioration.

Free-choice colour matches were made by 50 young normal trichromats on an anomaloscope. Six equations, of the kind 'blue' + 'green' = 'cyan' + 'yellow', were used in which the stimuli were defined by narrow-band well blocked interference filters. The stimuli were selected so that the instrument controls, which varied the quantities (blue/green), (cyan/yellow) and (cyan + yellow), were nearly independent controls for hue, saturation and brightness respectively. 'Yellow', 'green' and 'cyan' were fixed at 589, 499 and 480 nm, respectively, and the least interindividual variation in blue/green was found for 'blue' in the region 430-439 nm. This and a similar finding in the pilot study of Moreland and Young agree with expectations based on the density spectrum for macular pigment measured by Ruddock. Matches made by a few selected subjects, when the saturation control was locked at a position for the population mean, in the presence of large but typical saturation differences, were the same as when all three controls were used.
A straightforward procedure is described for the production of contrast enhancement of negatively stained macromolecules and biological membranes by single sideband phase contrast interference (electron optical shadowing). The instrumental adjustment required to produce this type of phase contrast illumination is readily achieved by beam deflection from the strioscopic (dark field) mode. Part of the hollow cone of electrons from the annular condenser aperture that are unscattered by the specimen are permitted to pass through the objective aperture and interfere with the scattered beam. The electron optical shadowing effect is produced because only one side of the unscattered beam is used. Careful adjustment of the beam tilt control, with the ability to tilt in any azimuth, allows optimal illumination conditions to be achieved. The results presented show the increased image contrast obtained using as specimens the purified cylindrical macromolecule from human erythrocyte membranes, purified nuclear envelopes and collagen fibres.

This article discusses the procedure and the skills that are required to perform handwashing effectively and outlines the importance of this procedure in relation to infection control. This article is the first of three subjects relating to the principles and practice of infection control.
Cervical cancer is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, but critics of the cervical cancer screening programme claim not enough is being done to prevent and treat the illness. In particular, the programme has been criticised for failing to target the most appropriate groups of women. The author reviews the current unsatisfactory situation, and suggests possible ways forward.
