Characterisation of a laser droplet formation process by acoustic emission.

The aim of this article is to describe an application of acoustic emission to characterise a process of laser droplet formation from a metal wire. Laser droplet formation is a crucial process in new laser droplet welding technology, where parts are joined by means of the heat content of a liquid metal droplet deposited onto the parts to be joined. A laser beam is used for heating and melting the wire tip, and for detaching the molten pendant droplet. Depending on the process parameters, three different outcomes of the process can be observed: (1) no droplet formed; (2) a droplet formed but not detached; (3) a droplet formed and detached from the wire. It is shown that AE can be used to monitor the process and to indicate the different process outcomes.

Mutations within the Ddc promoter alter its neuron-specific pattern of expression.

The Drosophila dopa decarboxylase gene (Ddc) is expressed in a reproducible set of approximately 150 neurons, and in a subset of the glia of the third instar larva's central nervous system (CNS). Expression in this pattern requires a cell type-specific neuronal enhancer/glial repressor region located 1000 bp from the transcriptional start site, and specific sequences within the promoter. We have used mutagenesis in vitro and P-element-mediated transformation to examine the role of the promoter, particularly its major CNS activator sequence (element I), in the generation of the wildtype expression pattern. Immunohistological analysis of these transgenic strains demonstrates that particular deletion mutations shift the site of transgene expression to a set of neurons which do not express Ddc at detectable levels in wild-type larvae. Transgene expression in these strains may be driven by a previously undetected activator sequence. Our data also suggest that glial expression may be driven by the same activator sequences that drive expression in the hypoderm.

[The feasibility of magnetic resonance tomography in the diagnosis of non-palpable breast tumors].

This study deals with the role of MRI in elucidating clinically silent lesions of the breast with indeterminate changes on mammography. MRI localisation of suspected lesions was possible in all cases by using double coils after contrast enhancement of the glandular tissue, independent of the findings on mammography. Inability to demonstrate micro-calcification did not prove a disadvantage. MRI cannot provide a definite tissue diagnosis, since there is overlap between the appearances of malignant and benign lesions.

[Thermographic investigations of thyroid foci (author's transl)].

Thyroid foci showing uptake on scintigraphy were examined by thermography and compared with foci showing no uptake. The following results were obtained: 1. One fifth of scintigraphically "cold" foci were also cold on the thermogram. 2. Two thirds to four fifths of foci showing scintigraphic uptake appeared as warm spots on the thermogram. 3. 10% of foci showing no uptake appeared as thermographic circumscribed hot spots. The combination of findings in "3" is suspicious of malignancy and this justifies the use of thermography in addition to scintigraphy and cytology.

[The effect of contrast volume on the radiographic demonstration of the gall bladder and bile duct (author's transl)].

No differences could be detected subjectively in the quality of cholangiograms after the use of varying amounts of contrast medium (20 and 30 ml iodoxaminic acid). Pharmacolinetic data which would indicate the use of either quantity are not available. Densitometric measurements carried out by us showed no significant statistical difference between the results of using 20 or 30 ml iodoxaminic acid.

[Radiation dose during mammography using various recording systems (author's transl)].

Patient dose during mammography for various recording systems, such as films, film-screen combination and xeromammography was measured by thermoluminescent densitometers. In the first set of experiments we measured dose per exposure, in a second set total surface dose at five points on the breast, using the following combinations: a) Two industrial film exposures and one xeromammographic exposure. b) two film-screen exposures and one xeromammographic exposure. c) One industrial film and two xeromammographic exposures.

[Broncho-vascular branching in the sub-segment (author's transl)].

The three pulmonary branching systems in the sub-segment have been studied by making casts. A comparison between them shows considerable differences between the vascular systems and the air passages. The bronchi show two types of branching: we can distinguish between irregular, dichotomous acute angled branching and predominantly regular dichotomous, wide-angled branching. The second type is often found in the bifurcations of large vessels and bronchi in the lung centre, where the lung parenchyma is made to fit into a confined space. Branching of the bronchi is very different from that of the vessels. The characteristic features of the latter are that the lateral branches are more numerous but smaller than the corresponding bronchi and show less contact with the lung periphery.

[Serial observations of a pulmonary echinococcus, with rupture into the bronchial system (author's transl)].

The radiological course of an echinococcus cyst of the lung before and after rupture is described, together with the cytological and histological findings. The resultant tissue changes and appropriate treatment (lobectomy) are discussed. In the presence of the appropriate radiological changes, eosinophil granulocytes in the sputum suggest cyst rupture, even in the absence of echinococcus tissue. However, bronchial asthma or Löffler's infiltrates should be excluded clinically. They delayed appearance of peripheral blood eosinophilia after cyst rupture and the development of an eosinophilic broncho-pneumonia is noteworthy.
