[History of medicine and military health service in doctorate's and habilitation theses written in Military Medicine Academy in Lodz-retrospective bibliography against the background of medicine and military medicine bibliographies].

The work introduces the subject of medicine history, military health service history and medicine bibliographies with particular attention to Polish accents. It remembers the beginnings of medicine history education in Poland in the 19th century, in the II Polish Republic and after 1945. It discusses widely the achievements of Military Medicine Academy in the range of medicine history military health service together with bibliography. It points out the necessity of dealing with this subject in didactic and scientific activity of the Academy.

[The influence of nitrates on platelet oxygen metabolism: in vitro studies].

Our investigations were carried out on human blood platelets obtained from persons aged 20-23, free from any systemic diseases. Drugs were incubated with blood platelets. Changes of antioxidant enzymes were detected. Glyceryl trinitrate increased the activity of Zn Cu-SOD (4.62%) and GPx (275.91%), concentration of ATP (13.01%) and the blood platelets aggregations (17.88%). Izosorbide dinitrate increased the activity of ZnCu-SOD (19.46%), GPx (150.36%) and Cat (15.62%), increased concentration of ATP (23.73%) and blood platelets aggregation (3.64%). Both preparats decreased concentration of MDA (Sustonit--30.79%, Iso-Mack--35.04%). Gliceryl trinitrate decreased the activity of catalase otherwise izosorbide dinitrate increased the activity of this enzyme.

[Platelets oxygen metabolism in women and men in different age groups].

The aim of the study as to assess the influence of the physiological aging process on the platelet cell metabolism in middle-aged people. A group of 17 healthy women (aged 47-59 years), and a group of healthy men (aged 45-60 years) were examined. The control group was composed of healthy women aged 19-25 years, and healthy men aged 19-27 years. The activity of hyperoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and the concentration of malonyldialdehyde were determined in platelets. In comparison to the control group, a significant decrease in the activity of hyperoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase as well as an enhanced concentration of malonyldialdehyde were observed in the group studied. Moreover, a diminished catalase activity was noted in platelets of men, while in women there were no significant changes. The study indicated that disorders in the function of thrombocytes, an excessive generation of oxygen free radicals, and impaired mechanisms of cellular antioxidative defence accelerate atherosclerosis and aging process. Therefore, it is necessary to cover middle-aged people, particularly those occupationally exposed to factors affecting defence mechanisms, with adequate preventive programmes.

[Lymphocytic infiltration in uveal melanoma].

After our observation of lymphocytic infiltration in uveal melanomas we present theoretical review to this interesting topic. Due to relatively low incidence of this feature we haven't got sufficiently large collection of cases for presentation of our statistically significant conclusions.

[Subjective evaluation of the effect of meteorological factors on the psychophysical status of workers of a large industrial plant].

The authors have conducted an epidemiological inquiry in a randomly selected group of 171 workers of a large refining and petrochemical plant. The investigation demonstrated a high meteorotropic sensitivity varying with the employment length, higher in women and those treated for various psychic and somatic disturbances. High meteorotropic sensitivity of refinery plant workers made the authors raise the hypothesis of the effect of chemical working environment pollution upon the physiological functions of the organism.
