[Recombinant human erythropoietin stimulates synthesis of fetal hemoglobin in patients with renal anemia treated by repeated hemodialysis].

Effect of intravenously administered recombinant human erythropoietin (rHu EPO) on haemoglobin (Hb) level, haematocrit (Ht), reticulocyte count and foetal haemoglobin (HbF) concentration was assessed in 10 patients with anaemia, treated by repeated haemodialysis due to end-stage kidney. As compared to the initial values, erythropoietin treatment brought about a significant increase in all the parameters examined. During the subsequent therapy with lower, supporting doses of erythropoietin, the elevated HbF values fell back to normal, whereas the higher level of total Hb and Ht were maintained.

[Activity of selected neutrophil enzymes of patients maintained on hemodialysis and treated with erythropoietin (rHu EPO)].

The peroxidase, alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, beta-glucuronidase and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase activity was assessed using a semiquantitative cytochemical methods in peripheral blood neutrophils from 10 maintenance haemodialysed patients treated with recombinant human erythropoietin (rHu EPO) due to severe anaemia. The examination was performed immediately prior to rHu EPO treatment, after 10 weeks and 32 weeks of therapy. A statistically significant increase in the beta-glucuronidase and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase activity was observed after 10 weeks, while all the enzymes studied except peroxidase showed a significant elevation of their activity after 32 weeks of the treatment as compared with the values obtained prior to therapy.

[Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS)--correlations with clinical studies].

Somatosensory evoked potentials were studied in 50 patients with clinically reliably confirmed diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in various disease stages. In a part of these patients the study was repeated after 3 years. The latency changes, amplitude changes and shape abnormalities of the obtained N9, N13 and N20 responses were evaluated. The authors discuss the observed changes of these potentials in relation to clinical findings and analyse the evolution of potential changes during the disease.

[Evaluation of the evoked potentials in various acquired polyneuropathies (Guillain-Barré syndrome and chronic recurrent polyneuropathy). Preliminary report].

In 15 patients with acquired polyneuropathy (Guillain-Barré syndrome and chronic recurrent polyneuropathy) the conduction velocity was measured in the peripheral nerves of the upper and lower extremities, the latency of the F wave was determined, and the somatosensory evoked potentials were assessed stimulating the median enerve and posterior tibial nerve. The abnormalities were assessed in the parameters of the obtained somatosensory evoked potentials comparing them with the changes of F wave and the velocity of conduction in peripheral nerves. The sensitivity and usefulness of these methods in acquired polyneuropathies are discussed.

[Simultaneous measurement of conduction velocity in the neural sensory and motor fibers during segmental stimulation].

The study concerned the method of investigation of upper extremity nerves which makes possible a simultaneous measurement of the conduction velocity in the motor and sensory fibres over the whole length of the nerve. Recording of responses was based on the use of surface electrodes which are safe, less painful for the patient, and provide sufficiently great responses without the necessity of using the averaging technique. Owing to simultaneous responses from the motor and sensory fibre from several stimulation sites along the nerve the localization of injury and its type are easier to establish. The method is less time-consuming than the conventional one and may be used by technicians.

[Comparison of EMG tracings obtained by means of computer analysis and by routine quantitative method].

The purpose of the present work was to compare EMG tracings obtained by the automatic method using the computer ANOPS and by the method of quantitative electromyography. The measurements of the automatic method were found to be reliable and reproducible permitting to distinguish normal from pathological tracing, and in the pathological tracing to discriminate between the so called primary muscular and the neurogenic changes. The automatic method permits a much larger number of potentials to be evaluated, besides it is less time consuming and more objective since it rules out subjective selection of potentials which is a drawback in the conventional method.

The value of automatic analysis for quantitative electromyography.

The value of automatic analysis for quantitative electromyography. Acta Physiol. Pol., 1979, 30 (2): 231--239. The authors describe the automatic analysis of EMG records by means of minicomputer ANOPS-101. Computer works on-line during EMG examination, being directly connected to the output of electromyograph. During slight voluntary muscle contraction 3 histograms could be obtained--namely: distribution of MUAP duration, number of their phases and their amplitudes. During maximum voluntary contraction two more histograms could be obtained--namely: distribution of amplitudes of spikes and distribution of intervals between spikes. These five histograms are displayed on the screen and the mean values are automatically calculated. As a result all quantitative EMG data are obtained which are sufficiently accurate for differentiation between pathological and normal recordings and which help to distinguish the myogenic atrophy from neurogenic one.
