[Ethical questions in pediatrics].

In the introduction the author submits association, connotations, and definitions of basic ethical terms, along with a classification of ethics. The author presents an outline of ethical problems of medicine and in particular paediatrics with an explanation why society pays special attention to these problems and why ethical self-reflection of doctors in general and paediatricians in particular is necessary.

[Salutogenesis and behavioral medicine].

As the opposite number of the classical biomedical model the author presents the bio-psycho-social model which attempts to supplement relatively omitted subjects of health and disease. Against the emphasis on pathogenesis he puts salutogenesis--problems leading to "firm health", a good health status despite unfavourable and risk factors, and health promotion. Behavioural medicine associates with this concept the problem of social influences on the development of diseases and their prevention and treatment. At the same time he pays attention to lifestyle, living pattern, habits, attitudes, behaviour and action which influence the health status. The author gives an account of theoretical concepts, subjects and emphasizes aspects of this approach.

[Maturation of the patient's personality ante finem].

The group of thanatological problems comprises also the question what happens in the patient's psyche in the last stage of his life. It was found that not only degeneration occurs but also the last stage of maturation of the personality. The author mentions concepts of maturation of the personality and characteristics of people coping well with the stress of death. Hardiness is a decisive characteristic of the personality of people who are a support for the dying. In the conclusion the author draws attention to the need to extend the curricula vitae of physicians by problems of philosophical anthropology.

[Hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and defense mechanisms].

The author reviews different types of defence mechanisms with particular regard to different patterns of those defence mechanisms as found in patients with hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, especially myocardial infarction. The findings account for the following rather straightforward pattern of defence mechanism: a high degree of intrapunitivity and repression closely linked with a low degree of hostility and projection. In the discussion section the author ponders the question of the direction of interdependence and suggests the possibility of circular causality.
