[Studies on the duration of the DNA synthesis in the myocardium of young rats (author's transl)].

In 150 young (14-day-old) rats the duration of the DNA synthesis of myocytes and interstitial cells of the heart was investigated by double-labelling with 3H-thymidine, and by the technique of %-labelled mitoses. Both these methods showed the S-phase to last about 10 h for each of the above 2 cell types. The inhibition of muscle cell proliferation which takes place in the early stages of the postnatal heart growth does not seem to be caused primarily by a disturbance of their S-phase.

[Laparoscopic sterilization with electrocautery: complications and reliability (author's transl)].

1084 laparoscopic sterilizations were evaluated in a retrospective study at the Universitäts-Frauenklinik Zürich. The operative and early postoperative complications and the reliability of the method were analysed and compared to the results in the literature. Based on a cumulative statistical analysis 0,5% intraoperative complications required laparotomy, the main indications being haemorrhages and bowel injuries. Failed attempts were encountered in one of 150 patients, the main causes of which were adhaesions and difficulties at establishing pneumoperitoneum. The failure rate of the laparoscopic electrocoagulation of the fallopian tube after a long-term follow-up was about 0,5%, 20--25% of these were ectopic pregnancies. The transection of the fallopian tubes did not diminish the pregnancy rate, but the risk of bleeding was considerably higher with this technic. Concurrently performed therapeutic abortion or preceeeding laparotomy did not increase the operative complication rate.

[Long-term outcome of sterilization as a function of the indication, marital status, age, number of children and concurrently performed therapeutic abortions (author's transl)].

On the basis of questionnaires 1084 sterilized women were interrogated concerning their satisfaction with sterilization. 769 (70.9%) fully completed questionnaires could be evaluated. 96.4% of women were satisfied with their sterilization. 1.3% of patients requested reversal of sterilization. Non satisfactory results occured mainly in women where the indication for sterilization was on non-social basis, in single women and in cases where an interruption of pregnancy was performed at the same time. No correlation was found between age or parity and the satisfactory outcome of sterilization.

Experience with the split-thickness graft technique in congenital absence of the vagina.

Between 1961 and 1977 vaginoplasty was performed in 24 patients at the Zurich University Hospital, Department of Gynecology, using the split-thickness graft technique; in 22 cases the result was functionally satisfactory. Based on their experience and previous reports the authors describe the surgical technique and the follow-up measures designed to ensure a functionally and anatomically optimal result.

[Routine gonorrhoeae cultures: a cost--benefit analysis on obstetric--gynaecological patients (author's transl)].

Report is made on the routine check up of Neisseria Gonorrhoeae cultures of 46.081 patients. 375 (0.81%) of these showed positive results. Of the 375 positive N. Gonorrhoeae cases 122 (33%) showed neither clinical symptoms nor anamnestic indications of Gonorrhoeae. The costs for the N. Gonorrhoeae cultures amounted to sfr. 18.407.-. Distributed on the 122 non-symptomatic and anamnestically mute cases there resulted costs of sfr. 148.-for each N. Gonorrhoeae case discovered by routine check up. The setting up a routine check up of Neisseria Gonorrhoeae cultures is therefore recommended.

[Experimental investigations on the regeneration of aortic endothelial cells. Automatic and visual evaluation of autoradiograms (author's transl)].

Autoradiographic studies on plane preparations using 3H-thymidine and pulse cytophotometric investigations on scrape preparations of aortic endothelium from 34 rabbits have brought the following results: By means of multiple 3H-thymidine-injections the number of labelled endothelial cells is higher in young growing animals than in older rabbits; pulse cytophotometrically we did not find any indication of polyploidization processes; from that we conclude a decrease of the growth fraction with advancing age. In comparison to visual counting the automatic image analysis is a highly effective method for the evaluation of autoradiograms. After multiple 3H-thymidine applications the mean blacking intensity of the labelled cell nuclei is lower in 2 months old animals than in 12 months old rabbits; that may mean an increase in the S-phase duration of the proliferating endothelial cells of the older animals. In the area with branching sites there are more 3H-thymidine-labelled endothelial cells than in the neighbouring vascular segments. The significance of these findings for the preferential incidence of arteriosclerosis in this area is discussed.
