[Renal production and excretion of AMPc after intravenous infusion of salmon calcitonin in man].

Intravenous infusion of salmon calcitonin in man produced an increase in the plasma levels and urinary excretion of cyclic AMP. This study demonstrates a net extraction of cyclic AMP from plasma by the kidneys but salmon calcitonin does not act only on the kidney and stimulates the production of cyclic AMP in extra renal tissues. The excess of cyclic AMP formed is catabolized by the kidneys.

[Study of systolic time by external phonomechanocardiography in myocardial infarction. 1. Value of systolic times and their course during the 1st 3 weeks].

A phonomechanographic study was carried out on 38 patients with recent myocardial infarction both during the initial phase of necrosis (between the 5th and 7th day) and at the end of the third week. The parameters studied were electromechanical systole (QB2), systolic ejection time corrected for heart rate (CET), the OBl interval, isometric contraction (IC), the pre-ejection periode (PEP), and the haemodynamic coefficient (PEP/ET). The results were compared with the values found in a similar control series. A tendency towards lengthening of the pre-ejection times and shortening of the corrected ejection time was noted. These changes were significant for the second measurement of CET, and for the ratio PEP/ET during the initial phase and on second measurement. The pre-ejection times were generally increased more markedly in the group of patients with left ventricular failure; the ejection time was also markedly shorter in this group, and the haemodynamic coefficient was larger. There was a tendency for the various measurements studied to return to normal by the third week.

2,3-Diphosphoglycerate red cell concentration changes during the menstrual cycle in woman.

The authors showed that 2,3-DPG red cell concentration (2,3-DPG) WAS SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER DURING THE LAST WEEK Of the menstrual cycle of five women (1.08+/-0.09 mol-,p;Hb-1) (M +/- 1 SE) THAN DURING THE First part and the last but one week of the cycle (0.86+/-0.04 mol-molHb-1, p less than 0.01). PACO2 was significantly lower during the last week of the cycle (36.3+/-1.3 torr) than during the first part and the last but one week of the cycle(40.1+/-0.8 torr, p less than 0.001). This hypocapnia was due to transient hyperventilation in the second part of the menstrual cycle. 5 men were studied during 4 weeks to determinate control values. No change was observed. The 2,3-DGP mean value (1.10+/-0.01 mol-molGb-1) was not significantly different of the values observed in the women during the last week of the cycle. These results suggest that the 2,3-DPG increase during the last week of the menstrual cylce is problably due to a respiratory alkalosis induced by progesterone secretion.

[Cardiac hemochromatosis. Anatomic, clinical and hemodynamical data].

The cardiovascular manifestations of idiopathic familial haemochromatosis (I.H.) should be well known. Of 25 patients seen for the most part in a Nutrition-Endocrinology Service, 10 suffered a purely cardiological problem at some point in their course.14 out of 18 patients had definite haemodynamic abnormalities. The discovery of cardiac haemochromatosis necessitates: a) depletive therapy by venesection which in certain cases is associated with the returm to normal of clinical and haemodynamic abnormalities (8-18-25). b) careful investigation of the family which, when positive, gives evidence of the primary nature of the iron excess. In members of the family suffering from I.H., early preventive therapy by vensections avoids the development of cardiovascular complications which are responsible for approximately 10 to 15 p.cent of causes of death in association with I.H.
